Oh my god. Finally! This sums up everything I've been trying to say about Kanberi! This anime sure does look like an Attack on Titan spin off but it's not! It's actually really different and it'a more colorful if you ask me. There are some flaws though, as stated in the article. However, all in all, this series is a fun ride for me! I really like this article! Smile

As someone who grew up in the era where there were tons of Battle Shonens, most being very similar. Does it really matter how much it took from AOT. Is their not bigger questions about the show that showed be discussed?

I'm not sure as to why people keep labeling Eren as a "sad protag", all emo and Shinji Ikari-like and stuff.

He's not lamenting or anything, he's ANGRY. He's either no-nonsense at best, or terrifying at worst.

Everyone's who've fought him has been terrified by his rage, and he more that definitely lives up to the name "Jaeger/Yeager/Jäger/Whatever".

He's one of the most insanely enraged anime protagonists I've seen in years, and I LOVE him because of that, due to his reliability; when I was 15, I wanted to kill everything around me too. To me, Bullies were my Titans, and I was Eren.

At this day and age I don't care about 'cloning' a show as long as it's only in concept department. In order for a show to have a completely original concept, it often has to be really 'weird', at least according to my taste. What matters the most to me is the execution. If the shows nails the execution right, than it's good enough in my book. And I must say Kabaneri is one of the most entertaining anime I've seen in awhile.

Wow what a clickbait title

Comparing Kabenari and AoT isn't even fair. AoT may be the Hot Topic Teen's anime of choice these days, but it's objectively a pretty garbage show. The story goes nowhere and it feels like it was written and drawn by a teenager. If AoT fans aren't going to watch Kabenari, I don't see any issue, it's their loss and the fandom will be less insufferable for it.

Kabenari feels like a show made by adults. The characters, world and art all feel extremely creative and polished, it's not a show that can be summed up in 3 sentences like AoT is. It is not necessary to justify Kabenari to people, it speaks for itself. It's like saying "is Avengers just a ripoff of the Fantastic Four movie?" The fans of the latter are irrelevant and the former shouldn't be compared.

And on the subject of Eren, he is a horrible protagonist, though that's partially because all of AoT's writing is bad. He's an impotent rage child, he pretty much just sucks and never develops. It is a chore to see him on-screen.

Ikoma and Mumei are everything Eren and Mikasa were supposed to be. Ikoma is one of the most satisfying anime protagonists in a while - he actually gets things done. He's a little flawless, but at least he's fun to watch.

My first point of comparison was Walking Dead, not Titan. Legions of zombies, going from place to place to try to avoid them, etc. All we need are the leads yelling "CARWL!" every couple of minutes.

Nobody likes an angry protagonist. That's why everyone prefers Levi's calm demeanor over Eren's asshole personality.

Levi? The guy who's best example of a legal defense was to beat the crap out of his client to prove his innocence? Not sure he's what you call calm so much as dedicated.

Great writing piece Jacob

I am also on the camp of those who think that Kabaneri is NOT a blatant rip off of Attack on Titan. The two shows are more similar at the beginning, but they have different goals that become clearer as the episodes progress.

I think Attack on Titan is a better written show with social and political commentary that I find very appealing. But I also enjoy watching the more joyful Kabaneri, and its visuals are so pretty to look at. I know the piece is not asking for grades from the readers, but as of right now I have graded the first anime season of Attack on Titan B+, and I give Kabaneri an A- after seven episodes.

I like both shows, but I'd probably give the edge to Kabaneri because the girls are of higher quality. Mikimoto's work is always great but it really does stand out in modern animation.

Is this a joke? Kabaneri is an obvious ploy by Wit to control a Titan-esque franchise, down to a T. I even twice accused the thing of being a clone before i even saw 1 frame in our preview guide and i guessed correctly but Titan isn´t that original franchise either to be fair. The anime is best compared to Alan Moore´s Crossed +100, down to the trains even. You only need to change the samurai to cowboys and replace the very soft R to a Hard NC-17. Not that the creators (or ANN) ever heard of that franchise...
I am caught up with the show and it miraculously isn´t the train wreck i expected, but the impressive budget ran out, a narrative still hasn´t showed up and the characters are even less defined than in Titans. I should drop the anime within an ep. but i will admit that i like the highly inappropriate music. 6/10?

I don't need to read the article to know this is another declaration of love for Kabaneri. The show had potential but it died the 2nd episode. AoT was boring too but it got me going for half of the show. Cloned or not cloned, both of them aren't any good but Kabaneri is the worst of the two as it got me bored quicker.

Personally I don't really like Ikoma. Erin is an idiot and the show is all to happy to make him realize that, allowing him to grow. Ikoma is just as much, if not more, of an idiot, but the show will do everything in its power to make sure he never realize, a kind of brain plot armor (he remind me of Deneris from game of thrones). So he does dumb stuff that always end up working out for him one way or another.
