I once asked a pair of manga artists why assistants don’t receive credit. They claimed it’s because of the belief that it’s an honor to even be selected. Frankly I find that to be utter bullshit. Something tells me that pair wouldn’t be so understanding of that belief if their publisher decided not to credit them because they felt it was an “honor” to be published at all.

Luckily not all manga artists share that view. Assistants deserve credit and fair pay for their work because of they weren’t needed the position wouldn’t exist.

Props to this guy. Not getting paid for overtime is literally wage theft, and it is gross to me how acceptable it is in a lot of industries in Japan.

There was a similar problem in the games industry in the 70s, where devs weren't getting credited for making games. This must be a problem for Mangaka starting out on their own as they can't build a portfolio on work they weren't credited for.

I have to give him credit for taking the initiative to make those changes himself. A lot of negative workplace practices, regardless of industry, perpetuate because people think that underlings and new workers have to "pay their dues" just because those with more seniority had to do it before.

Show the receipts.

Kakuishi says that he kept his timecards, which have an accurate record of the exact hours he worked for Mita.

He got the receipts. Pay the man what he is owed.

I've seen some mangaka credit their assistants (e.g. Double-S who draws "Until Death Do Us Part"). Their name doesn't go on the cover or anything, but they are credited in the front or back of the tankoubon.

I'm glad the comments here are positive and supportive. Manga assistants shouldn't be taken advantage of. I hope he sparks a #MeToo movement for overworked underpaid artists.

At least on some of the "Fairy Tail" and "Rave Master" translated tankoubon I have seen, the assistants are listed in around the table of contents.
