This may in part be due to the Switch releasing in March instead of November, allowing more people to gain familiarity with the system.

And that there were more people to buy it in 2017 than there were to buy the Wii in 2006.

Or maybe Nintendo has a really good system that a lot of people like? I don't know why there's all this cognitive dissonance with people trying to explain away the positive reception of the Switch without having to acknowledge the qualities of the Switch.

Probably just diving the number of copies sold by the number of consoles sold. It’s not going to be exact, but it would be a decent ball park figure.

That's just how petty some people can be.
On subject that's pretty amazing. It's so funny coming after all the doom and gloom era. Nintendo is clearly still strong. The switch is such an amazig system. The console/portable gimmick is just so brilliant. I understand why it caught up so much. Plus all the amazing games.
Microsoft should learn something here. They may have started decent, but they are so irrelevant with the Xbox nowadays. How long as it been since they released anything exclusive and exciting? The Xbox brand clearly needs some revitalizing. For now I am ready for our Sony and Nintendo overlords.

Don't mistake my comment as me trying to "explain away" the success of the Switch; I'm a Switch owner and I LOVE my system. Watched that reveal trailer from October 2016 dozens of times. Simply pointing out that the Switch did have an unfair advantage over the Wii when it came to this particular metric; it's just not terribly surprising that sales records keep getting broken when there are simply more people around to buy the stuff. The Switch certainly deserves to be putting up the numbers and breaking the records it is, but directly comparing it to a system that came out a decade ago isn't a total 1:1 comparison is all.

....This seems pretty hypocritical when a good portion of the Switch's library is last gen or current ports.

Well, it wasn't cause Nintendo "has a really good system" cause if it was based only on the system then the Nvidia Shield, which is pretty much the same thing as the switch but android, would have sold just as well which you can get for 100 bucks cheaper then the switch. The Switch is a tablet that has already been on the market previously but sold by Nintendo with Nintendo games at a higher price point.
If you think I'm exaggerating the issue then feel free to look up the prices of the SanDisk SD cards with Nintendo logo on them. You'll notice they are much more expensive despite SanDisk making SD cards already for much cheaper but you pay more for that Nintendo logo. Nintendo does this cause they know their fans will buy mediocre products with their logo on it. (not speaking for games since they actually work on those).

Takes so much R&D to take old tech and combine it with old tech and slap a logo on it. Its almost like Nintendo never does that and hasn't for decades ...

It's a pretty dumb metric. But I guess there's little else to get hyped about this early in and unlike last gen Nintendo seems pretty desperate to stay in the headlines.
I don't know about others, but personally I don't care for these things. Highest selling, best this, most of these. Meh. But I care about how they fucked up Zelda while everyone still pretends it's one of the two good games the Switch has. So much potential. Wasted. It's sad that game makers feel the need to hold gamers hands this much nowadays.
