My condolences to Yamada-san's family. Wanpack was the unsung hero of the industry, a super-outsourcer that rivaled some of the smaller studios. I hope some of their great staff relocate to better known outfits or start one of their own.

I've never heard of a studio before that only does Key-Animation and In-betweening outsourcing for other studios. Mostly it seems like they just do those on the side.

Oh that's interesting, I thought they were formed late 90s/early 00s. Come to think of it, wasn't it the same, outside of the odd OVA, for SHAFT.

Yup. SHAFT started out that way, as did a good many studios. There are a good number of studios that are specifically outsource studios these days as well. It's actually pretty common. Most of them intend to eventually start producing stuff themselves, but not all do. Wanpack was bigger than a good majority of Animation Producing studios, yet they never had any public intentions of going beyond outsourcing.
It's a shame to see that disappear entirely in a single instance. Hopefully one of these now unemployed guys decides to start their own studio to take its place. The industry needs them badly.

There are hundreds of studios just doing animation work for bigger studios. It's more common than creating your own anime shows.

I remember the name Wanpack Studio mainly for doing the animation of a bunch of whole episodes of Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden.

It's incredibly common, not just in Japan, but in other countries too. Korea does almost nothing but subcontract work for Japanese and American series.

Still, you never expect a company like Wanpack to shut down this suddenly. All my condolences to Yamada's family and all the animators at Wanpack.
