Most of the sequels have had big drops on disc sales; Osomatsu-san being the most dramatic case. BBB&B is continuing the trend. The only explanation I can find for these drops is that Japanese fans are no longer that into buying super expensive singles.

Good to see LOTL going strong. Tangentially related, other than MHA and Overwatch, Land of the Lustrous was quite possibly the most popular cosplay at Katsucon this year. I guess it's a combination of good character designs, a fairly easy cosplay outfit to pull off, and a story that seems to resonate with specifically that community pretty strongly. Anyway, if it's any indication of the popularity of the show here in the West, that's a good sign. I hope to see more of that show!

Physical media is just doing this across the board. There are more ways to access your anime legally now, and Japan is finally jumping on the legal streaming train pretty full bore now too, so only the hardest of hard collectors are continuing to purchase. And that's even more of a niche than it used to be.

I'm so happy to see that Land of the Lustrous is doing well, it was honestly my favorite anime last year and I want a s2 so much. I hope we get a special edition from Sentai but either way I'll be getting the Blu-ray.

Another reason that can account for a sequel getting lower sales figures is the waiting time between the 1st and 2nd seasons. For example, "Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond" aired just over 2.5 years after the 1st season. If a 12-13 TV epi. show has a sequel that comes out a year or more later after the 1st season, the hype or fan base might drop quite a bit. Waiting to have more stuff to cover from the source material aside, a 12-13 TV epi. series might work best to have the 2nd season air at least 2 seasons after the 1st. For 24-26 TV epi. shows, that's where there is more room for a longer waiting period.
