Someone out there must be a big Tezuka fan.

Wow...
They were really off in estimates of how much the page would sell for!

They've actually sold some pieces of American comic art from the 1980s and 1990s in the six-figure range, too. There was a Dark Knight Returns (1986, Frank Miller; Batman and Robin/Carrie Kelley) splash page that sold for just under $450,000 in 2011. The cover art to Amazing Spider-Man #328 (1990, Todd MacFarlane; Spider-Man and Hulk pictured, the two main characters he was known for at Marvel), sold for just over $657,000 in 2012.

It really has less to do with age -- there's very little comic art surviving from before the 1950s -- and more to do with the popularity of the comic book issue and characters in question. The artist is also another important factor.

It's nice to see someone still appreciates Tezuka and Astro Boy outside of Japan.

The Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) page in question is from the 'Robot Land' chapter of the Tetsuwan Atom manga. I have read the 'Robot Land' chapter in the original.
Kōdansha's Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu says:
Quote:
ロボットランドの巻
(原題 ロボットランドの怪人の巻)
昭和37年5月号~9月号 少年 連載

「ロボットランド」 is 'Robot Land'. 昭和37年 is A.D. 1962.
So though the auction house said, '1956-1957,' Kōdansha's Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu says that it was carried in the magazine in 1962.
Tezuka Productions' web site about Tezuka Osamu, too, says that 'Robot Land' was carried in the magazine in 1962.

Have you double-checked the original publication date with reliable sources, Ms Sherman?
Also, how many volumes of Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), which is probably the most famous classic among the works of the über-famous manga-ka, have you, who are supposed to be a professional journalist on manga and anime, read in the original or in translation?

shosakukan, even the Japan Times source this article was using got it wrong. It said the 6-paneled page "was drawn at the end of the 1950s and comprises six panels showing Astro Boy fighting an enemy."

Since the credit line of that Japan Times article says, 'AFP-JIJI,' the Jiji Tsūshin news agency provided The Japan Times with the news story in question.
In fact, a Jiji Tsūshin article about the auctioned Astro Boy page says, '1950年代後半の月刊誌「少年」の連載用とされ、主人公アトムの戦闘シーンが6コマにわたり描写されている。' So probably the staffer for The Japan Times swallowed what Jiji Tsūshin had said. Sadly, such a thing can happen when a second-rate 'generalist' handles a story which contains things that only specialists can scrutinise.
The point is that Ms Jennifer Sherman is supposed to be a professional journalist who specialises in manga and anime. Not something like a common newspaper reporter whom people don't particularly expect being knowledgeable about manga from. Also, she works for a commercial news site that specialises in manga and anime.
About her job, she said, 'Write news and interest articles for one of the Internet's leading anime news sources...Edit other contributors' work for accuracy, thoroughness, and style...Research background information for breaking news and follow-up articles.'
If a professional journalist who specialises in manga and anime cannot even recognise 'Robot Land' from the most famous classic of the god of manga, naïvely swallows a manga-related news story maybe written by Jack-of-all-trade-master-of-none and cannot scrutinise the story with a specialist's eye, probably it is rather a serious matter.

Is it possible for you to share an image from your original copy to verify the page in question comes from that chapter published in 1962? I ask this because as it stands, we have multiple reputable news sources mirroring one another's mistake according to you, but no way to verify the error without getting a hold of the Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu book you mentioned.

Are you from Missouri?
You should have used your suspicious nature when Ms Sherman was writing the article about the auctioned Astro Boy page.
The Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu book which includes 'Robot Land' is buried deep somewhere in my library, and it is difficult to dig it up.
I copied the bibliographical datum from a notebook on which I had made a note of it when I had read 'Robot Land'.
The print edition of Kōdansha's Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu became out of print, and Kōdansha later published the bunko (smaller paperback) edition of The Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu.
The Book Walker site, which deals in e-books, has a page about Volume 5 of the bunko edition of The Complete Works of Tezuka Osamu, and Volume 5 includes the 'Robot Land' chapter. And the web page also has the 'bibliographical data' part, and it clearly says, '『ロボットランドの巻』(原題「ロボットランドの怪人の巻」) 昭和37年5月号~9月号 「少年」連載.'

Since you have appeared in this thread, I'm sorry to trouble you, but I would like to ask you a question.
Why don't you fix the 'Otogi Zoshi...medieval novels' part in your '7 Eras of Japanese History' articles despite the fact I and another guy pointed it out and said that Otogizōshi were short stories?

Otogizōshi's being short stories is a piece of common knowledge to people who possess a certain level of knowledge of Japanese literature.
Again, are you from Missouri? If so, see them with your own eyes. Otogizōshi are still in print.

Oh, that 'Missouri' thing? These articles explain it.

Ah, I see, this was a low-key insult at me for taking the time to ask for verification even though your earlier comments said the staff "swallowed" what the Japanese source said.

I'm going to ignore that part. I wanted to let you know I went through your comment log and looked over all the articles you submitted corrections for and corrected all of those articles, because being accurate is important to me here even when corrections are submitted in a condescending way.

In the future, the staff here doesn't check the forums very regularly. Well, I do for Interest usually but the News team might not. They'll see corrections faster if they're sent to [email protected].

Have a good day.

Next time you want to nitpick and be pedantic shosakukan I suggest you leave out the thinly veiled insults towards people.
