Somehow I just know I'm going to end up buying the series over again. Why am I so week when it comes to DBZ?

Here's my view:

Pros:
1) 39 eps. for $50 UNCUT.
2) Japanese music for the Japanese version and the English dub.
3) Cleaned-up picture quality (less film dirt, grain, scratches)...

Cons:
1) Widescreen. Bad news for the TV series, since it's fullscreen. That means at least 20% of the original picture is getting cut out.
2) 8 eps. per disc. That means they'll be pushing the video compression, which may not look as good.

I hope that this "widescreen" is some kind of optional feature or a mistake, I'd rather have the entire picture for the TV series. (It's OK for the movies though.) Regardless, I've seen the whole series already in fullscreen, so I'm still picking this set up.

My main reasons for wanting this: The entire series with Mr. Simmons' subtitles, and the English dub with the original score FINALLY. I still think this set will be worth the money.

Especially with the "revised English dialogue"... Does that mean "General Tao" will be changed to the more proper "Mercenary Tao" name, and FUNi will make the whole English dialogue for all 3 series sync together better? I look forward to seeing more details. I'm still very excited.

All I have right now is the old Pioneer boxset of the Namek saga, the initial (better) versions of the first 3 movies, and up to movie 8. I still need to try and get the Pioneer version of the Saiyan saga just for kicks. But I'll definitley pick up these remastered, more economically sound boxes as well.

Nowhere in that release does it say widescreen.

Hm, handy econo-box sets that allow me to pick and choose my favorite bits from the series without having to commit to the whole thing. Y'know, I wasn't going to buy any DBZ initially, given that it's mostly just a nostalgia trip for me at this point, but now I'm strongly reconsidering. I may at least snag up through Cell.

So, what format we talking here? HD-DVD, Blu-Ray? Or is this just regular DVD?

This does not surpise me.Next box set they are going to do is blu-ray and those fans will sink X amount into those sets. This goes across the board for all box sets of different shows.

I took the article to mean regular DVD with enhanced video & audio, and I really hope I'm right. If it ends up being Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, though, screw it. I'm still convinced those are gonna be this generation's answer to Betamax, and I firmly refuse to sink any money into them (for at least another twelve to fifteen years, anyway).

Honestly, not one, but two ultra-expensive DVD replacements (whose enormous costs do not, in my opinion, justify their slightly greater storage space and a prettier picture quality for only those people who've blown five and six figures solely on their entertainment rig), coming out and competing with each other way too soon after regular DVD's emergence into the mainstream market. How could this not fail?

This is pointless. They already began remaking the series but in the uncut version, etc...

I don't think anyone would really care to pay money to see episodes they have already seen before. Not only that, I'm sure most people don't care about DBZ anymore.

Overall, the episodes are really nothing new.

Actually, I almost refuse to buy anime on DVD unless I have already seen the series before. That way, I know that what I'm getting is worth my money.

And yeah, DBZ is past its prime, but like I said there are always people like me who'd like a nostalgia trip every so often, and are just waiting on the series to drop to just the right price before swooping in and snapping it up.

I am a true original Dragonball/Z fan from ages past and had to stop collecting the DVD's for financial reasons. 250+ eps is 250+ eps Anime smile0. And to think some people pay Geneon $200+ dollars for 24 to 26 episodes of some series.

Brtw as far as the widscreen thing, I can handle stretching to proportion, but cropping? Even to anamorphic would bug the crap out of me as I have seen all of the episodes in fullscreen.

Hopefully we will see the movies get this treatment Anime smile.
