Well the reason why they are re-airing shows like this is because obtaining new shows have become rather....... difficult due to current events. |

If they had to pack something from their old Adult Swim anime inventory to air, then Toonami made the best choice possible here.
Paranoia Agent in it's 13 episodes is better than all 5 seasons of Food Wars by a million light years. |

I always knew that acquiring the rights to multi-season anime was a different story than acquiring an "old school", non-seasonal, long-running series or a multi-cour anime. I just didn't know for sure if you had to acquire the rights to each individual season, because that would explain why Adult Swim always reruns the second season on Big O (which they helped produce) but never the first. I'm glad I finally got that out of my system.
Now I know why anime television is all the more a risky business. You would have to make four deals to acquire the broadcast rights to every season of My Hero Academia, when it would be cheaper just to acquire the first part of Dragon Ball Kai. Obviously, you want to go with the show that's still in production, has enough episodes to air in strip repeats, is super popular (in a mainstream sense, like commercial value), and is suitable for the demographic of your network. As a whole, The Cartoon Network family is predominantly Shonen, with a few Seinen series and movies here and there. Every other non-kids network goes for Seinen series since that's closer to the general TV audience and the age range of most millennial geeks and nerds. Its just too bad that now even select long-running American shows, like Family Guy and Bob's Burgers, seem to be sold in a similar way according to what's happening with Disney (FX/Freeform). |

I'm sure some of this is because Toonami's ability to air current shows is questionable, at best. MHA just got going with dubbing at home, so Toonami is only a couple of episodes behind. Black Clover had a decent buffer, but that won't last forever. They already did a Kai marathon last week presumably to give the schedule some breathing room. I would think that the transition to season 3 of Food Wars would have been fairly straight forward considering there was that plan to work more closely with Crunchyroll and season 3 is dubbed. (I've already watched Sentai's blu-ray release)
I suppose I can see the sense in picking Paranoia Agent. We've been seeing a resurgence in Kon's titles being available, so there would at least be reason to think there is interest. Toonami also likes to go with stuff that they are familiar with. On the other hand, an interest in terms of sales of discs isn't necessarily a good indicator of what the TV audience will watch. Toonami focuses as heavily on shonen as it does because those shows get the ratings they want. While I appreciate that they aired things like Lupin part 5, it is hard to miss that it very quickly got shuffled to the back end of the block. So yeah, I don't mind that Paranoia Agent is getting in front of an audience that probably hasn't seen it, but there are a lot of other old titles that would probably do better in the ratings. |

If I recall, Demarco clarified that the Toonami/Crunchyroll partnership is in regards to co-producing original anime (ex. Uzumaki and Blade Runner) and not about sharing licenses that Crunchyroll picks up. |

Well it’s true that it’s weird how Toonami can get Mob Psycho 100 Season 1 but haven’t shown Mob Psycho 100 II. Though there was that whole Funimation breaking up with Crunchyroll around that time which probably made things weird. But obtaining something like was Food Wars was always kind of odd. Sure it’s a Shōnen series but there’s plenty of Shōnen series that have never even been on Toonami but could. But with that being said, I do love it when Toonami changes up things by putting series you would never would think would be put on Toonami but do. |
