Typically only content holders such as Mangamura can be convicted of a crime. One who reads manga online typically doesn't save the images onto their own hard drive (never do that). But if you're accessing manga from a piracy site and your IP address is being logged, substantial visits to an illegal site could be used in a court of law to convict you. So do your online manga reading on an official hosting site like Viz.com or via any of the ones advertised on ANN.

Hypothetical money. It's always funny to read the 'estimates' they throw out whenever an article like this comes out. The fine he actually got is probably a lot closer to the real number...
