This is what is killing the Anime industry in the US. You dont just stop producing a title once you commit. If you get a title, you do it all. This is why I am an avid fan of thinpacks - you get the whole series at once and dont have to scrounge around for the rest of the series for 10 years to come.

Yeah, where is that series anyway? That was licensed a good while back. Damn, I guess 'GGG' is for the few while 'Voltron' is for everyone that watched it. Well, as long as they don't just quit and finish it. I would hate to see this series see the way of 'Air Master'. As well, as other series that have gone on hiatus because of poor sales. Better start grabbing the 5 they got. @#$% man! This bites. |

Wouldn't hold your breath. Won't be coming out of hiatus until Voltron is done and complete. I've been rather annoyed with this problem by Media Blasters. I could care less about the "all important" campy old animated version of Power Rangers, and all the releases I *do* care about and want to give them money for, have been put on "hiatus". The people at Media Blasters really need to learn how to seriously multi-task. |

I'm not a fan of either title but I agree 110% with you on that one! That should go for manga titles as well. Not only am I saying that to the distribution companies but to the manga-kas as well. Can we say CLAMP (X/1999 & Legal Drug) and Yukiru Sugisaki (DNAngel)? |

So the legendary, hot-blooded and well-written epic King of Braves Gaogaigar, get's put on hold for the generic Toei series about a boaring Golion that slashes things with its swords while fighting the most one-sidedly evil and uninteresting enemy empire in anime history. And it's not even the slightly better Golion, it's Voltron. I'm playing Super Robot Wars W right now and the Golion story is so laughably uninteresting and cliche to the extreme, that I can barely comprehend this decision.
It's like the one guy said, if you commit to a series, frigging finish it for the people that are buying it, don't screw them over because suddenly another series is selling better. Unless you ADV Manga and you want to buy up a whole bunch of licenses and not do anything with them. |

Damn, this just irritates me. I don't know why Media Blasters was expecting GGG to be a big hit. Now don't get me wrong, it's an AWESOME series, but it's also ten years old and largely unknown in this country, not to mention that the designs will probably cause a lot of people to mistakenly dismiss it as substandard kids' stuff.
So if they were banking on it to be the next Berserk or Kenshin for them in terms of sales, that's a big screwup on their part. But it's no reason for them to ditch it in favor of a vastly inferior series like Voltron. The only reason Voltron is selling is because of the nostalgia factor. Even for a 70's/80's super robot show it's nothing special. If it hadn't been (poorly) dubbed in English and shown on US TV no one would care about it and it would no doubt be selling much worse than GaoGaiGar. |

1- Making Voltron dvd's means Media Blasters will make money. Money which can be used to do a good release of the rest of GaoGaiGar later one, and keep them licensing anime for a good while, which isn't make much compared to GGG. 2- Part of it is the general decline of the industry. Voltron is an exception, being bought by people who want the DVD's, in great numbers. This is NOT something that happens with most anime. Anime dvd's aren't selling as well as they should. It's not poor dubs. It's not poor packaging. Everything's unedited. Everything's released on a decent schedule. It's that SOME fans just download it or watch it on youtube, and don't bother buying it at all, which is the real problem with current anime fandom. Too many fans don't buy anime. Those who watch fansubs continue to watch licensed series well after they're released officially, post dubbed episodes on Youtube, and think everything has to come to them for FREE. If even a fraction of these fans went out and bought the anime they watch, series like GaoGaiGar would increase their sales a good deal. It's not the only problem nowadays [crowded market, and a major retailer closing didn't help], but it's certainly the most widespread, and one that's just gonna grow- just look at the comments made by Geneon and ADV at the State of the Industry Panel at Anime boston regarding youtube. Anyhoo, that's my 2 cents. Everyone, enjoy Voltron, and hope that it does well so MB can stay afloat, and keep releasing great anime like GaoGaiGar despite it's lower sales potential. Keep in mind that many of their titles were rescheduled due to Voltron, and they'll probably resume the dub if sales warrant- so keep buying those DVD's! |

I loved Voltron as a kid, but when I recently watched it again I realized just how awful it really was. It's one show that really should have stayed firmly in my memory.
Now I *love* GGG and bought the first two volumes, but have been unable to find 3 or 4 in stores. Maybe that's why it's not selling well, you can't even find it at Best Buy. |

If you can't find it, then specialty order it wherever you buy anime. It's kind of like ordering it online..... but without paying the shipping, and supporting your local brick and motar anime retail store 
I've found that whenever I special order something, the store in question will usually order copies of it for the store, even obcure stuff like Aura Battler Dunbine, Kodocha, the Maze OVA, and even the french/japanese language Lady Oscar boxsets from Imavision...... me ordering these shows HMV, CDPlus and other places I've special ordered that there's demand for these titles. As such, they'll often get additional copies for the store, which another fan who prefers to actually buy their anime will stumble upon, thus leading them to wanting to collect the series. It's not hard to do- just give them the title information, and they'll search their distributor's info, and order it in. They can also help you by telling you how much it'll cost you in most cases- which can let you compare against what other stores in your area might offer. You usually only have to wait 2 weeks to a month, which is what it'd take to ship anyways. And by getting it into their heads that someone wants this show, it usually results in them ordering more copies of a given show [just like people buying a given show if they have it in stock does---- this just shows that people like the show you ordered so much, they're willing to go the extra distance]. |

I'm not TOO mad about this. At least not if Media Blasters realizes what needs to be done and devotes their full energies to GGG once Voltron is said and done.

I haven't seen GaoGaiGar so I'm not a fan seriously put off by this, though I am put off because I do want to eventually see it. Heck, even though it'd annoy the dubbies, if Media Blasters put out the remainder of the series on sub only discs if they don't have the expenses to throw around more episodes dub in English, then I'll go for it.
Even then I doubt Phoenix will come out. There's been absolutely no word of it for a long time, and there's not much reason to expect to hear anything soon, either. |

MB seems to have bitten far more than it can chew. The AoD forum on this topic had someone reporting that they contacted them and was told that the remaining volumes would be sub only. I would rather a company commit to a release--fully--and delay it if it in the current circumstance than skimp out on the rest. A lot of this is also due to the severe lack of advertisement and the numerous delays with the first volume. Additionally, I can't fault the company for parlaying their efforts towards a cash cow like Voltron, but this really ends up making MB look bad and less trustworthy.
And yeah, where IS Hinotori?! I only have seen one more production credit placed on the Encyclopedia entry, bring it to a grand total of two in the last six months. If GGG was such a "hard sell," then how are they going to handle something like this one, a real slow-churner from slow drama master Ryosuke Takahashi? Also, are they collaborating with PBS Thirteen on the production or broadcast? |
