The show got truly convoluted in the second half so a changed 4th and 5th film are good.

I still think that 5 recap movies for a 2 cour series is pretty ridiculous, you might as well just release it as another tv series

That's exciting to hear. I can only hope this new material will have plenty of MC and Aida scenes.

Will this actually improve the story? Or just double-down on the Tomino craziness?

These aren't recaps, though. They're sort of classified as replacements or definitive versions meant to replace the TV series. These are basically Tomino's do over. Well, of his discussion from his G-Reco book are anything to go by.

So basically instead of remaking it as a tv series they're remaking it as movies? That actually makes a lot more sense now, thanks. Most other places referred to them as recaps/compilations.

They do this a lot with Gundam compilation films, heavy reanimation of scenes and new material though 50% new would be a record.

Course its kind of the reverse of the Dragon Ball Super and recent Yamato films where they release a film in the cinema then cut it up and some scenes reanimated/couple of new scenes added to form a series.

I'm somewhat interested in these because the mech animation in the series was great. The series itself was a train wreck, and I'm skeptical that Tomino can/will fix it.

Not really true. A significant portion of the recap movies have very minor changes / new content. First/Zeta are probably the only ones with heavy reanimation or substantial new material.

SEED films were substantially amended. For example a certain character death was removed to make way for Destiny alongside reanimation of some scenes and new content. And the destiny recap films changed the main character from Shinn to Athrun.

Man, this series burned me the first time around when it was airing on TV. Have been a Gundam fan for well over 15 years so I really tried to like this series but kept dropping it at around episode 5 or so. After like 4 attempts I finally finished it and my opinion remains the same. It is a shame because the animation style was really interesting for a Gundam series. This makes Gundam AGE like a masterpiece to be quite honest. Are the movies they've made so far any better or the same?
