That's.. surprising, to say the least. I don't see why they rushed through the first season so quickly if a second season was planned — I assume they knew about the second season during production?

The first season doesn't even cover half the game, does it?

If we go minute detail then yeah as it really skims over early stuff, but where it ends I knew it would end because after that it focuses in the BETA itself. I still don't get where people would assume this would be a 36+ ep series to be honest. Issue is why a 1 year wait? Most split season is 1-2 to seasons at most.

It was planned for 24 total ep no matter. I figured 1st half would cover up to the end of coup and then 2nd half would cover the actual BETA threat. Still sucks to see such a long gap between 1st and 2nd half. Hopefully the year will allow them to put out a 10/10 animation. 1st half the characters were all over the place in design and it was obvious all the time and budget went to the TSF. If the 2nd half polishes up the characters themselves and adds on to the TSF's I'd say it would be worth it. Still think as a whole a year wait is a net negative.

There's still too much story left to adapt in just 1 extra cour. The first cour didn't even adapt half of the story.

If the show is only 24 episodes, then the second half will be even more rushed then the first as we've only covered about a third of the VN.

Exactly this. The first cour felt rushed from having to cover worldbuilding and character development that it lost by skipping the entirety of Extra and Unlimited, but it has still only covered two of Alternative's six story arcs:

  1. √ - Unlimited do-over
  2. √ - Coup d'état
  3. spoiler[XM3 Trials (aka, "PTSD arc")]
  4. spoiler[Operation 21st]
  5. spoiler[BETA Invasion]
  6. spoiler[Operation Cherry Blossom]

The Type 94 blog speculated that the plan might be for two seasons and a movie, with the movie covering just the final arc, and that looks like it would work.

Somehow I have a hard time seeing them doing a movie with how they are half-assing this adaption. That being said cramming the rest of the story into 12 episodes seems so impossible that they'd almost have to do something else in addition to another cour.

I guess I'm not surprised at a continuation if nothing else because of the pedigree of what they're adapting.

I'm glad I decided to binge this after the first few episodes and waited on watching more. October 2022? What the hell... At least they're coming back for the second half unlike Full Metal Panic.

We’ve seen plenty of anime productions fall apart this year from coming back too quickly (86, To Your Eternity), so I’m fine with Muv-Luv taking their time, especially considering how threadbare the character animation is to begin with.

My hope is for them to use anime adaptation for #3 and #4, and doing a movie each for #5 and #6. Both are great material for movies (I could see VN enjoyers going to the cinema just to see them without even watching the TV series), and most especially I don't want them to rush #4 because personally it's the best Muv Luv arc in the franchise and I totally don't them rushing it.
