I really hope that this "sequel" is another season and not anything else.

So Mahouka got once season way back in 2014 and was a big hit and conversation starter (though not all the chatter was positive). Then what? Crickets. Oh there was a movie in 2017 which included lots of characters and referenced a lot of events that wasn't in the anime and even though it was canon as it was based on the source material, it was nonetheless as self-contained and inconsequential to the larger narrative as filler would have been (except that in filler might have been more interesting as MHA: Two Heroes and One Piece: Stampede were). Then six years later we get 3 series back-to-back-to-back?

Except the context that made Mahouka such a big hit in 2014 is gone. The market has changed. People don't like emotionless or bland overpowered MCs, high school magitek settings, harem hi-jinks (often including the MC's sister), social darwinist worldviews etc. anymore the way they did in that era when Infinite Stratos, Chivalry of a Failed Knight, A Certain Magical Index (who also waited too long to pick back up), The Asterisk War, Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle, Aldnoah.Zero etc. were huge hits.

A comparison: look at the box office from 2014: The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, The Fault In Our Stars and Divergent were huge hits. Try releasing a YA film today. Exactly.

Awesome. I just started reading the light novels since I wasn't sure any more anime content would be produced. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the story adapted.

You make it sound like people don't like series like Mahouka anymore, but it is still one of the best selling light novel series and if my memory is correct the second season of the anime also did pretty well.

If it's not making money, the series wouldn't be getting more new anime. This news itself is proof enough that the series is still a hit and that people still want more of it.

All is right in the world after the movie was set after season 2 (volume 9 to 11) then they made season 2 after, which didn't adapt volume 8 then the recent anime covered volume 8. Now we should be at volume 12. Only 20 more volumes to adapt. lol

Think you've overdosed on copium pal. Evidently you haven't been paying attention to sales numbers lol.

While i don't agree with the assessment that Mahouka is not still really popular, I too have wonder why when the first season was really popular, excluding the movie which also jacks continuity by introducing Lina early, did they wait so long for a sequel, and then all of sudden we get sequel spinoff ova sequel? Like what was it in 2014 that caused the lack of a sequel sooner, and what has happened now that not only are we getting sequels but we literally had a spinoff that was just a retelling of series one from Miyuki's standpoint.

Maybe i can hold out hope we get like high school dxd season 5-8 all at once?

Given that the light novel is very successful atleast inside Japan and so is the anime we can safely assume that they don't care what the foreign audience wants and the emotionless, op mc will always remain a successful trope in LNs, Mangas and anime. Every season has atleast one successful op character show take Rising of the shield hero as an example also the irregular at demon school or something I don't remember the name correctly

I'd guess it was still around the time when series getting sequels wasn't commonly the norm, or Madhouse hadn't been interested and it took some time to find someone else

I mean we just have to look at the industry that last 2-3 years. Sequels are becoming a lot more common, opposed to when mahouka first aired, where a lot more shows would get the 1 and done treatment.

Considering Mahouka is one of the best selling Light Novels in Japan to this day, I would say no, its not out of the times and people in Japan are not bored of the "Emotionless MC in a Magic High School" setting.
