So much material yet to be covered. Hoping for a multi-cour adaptation.

Personally really hoping its a continuation and not a full reboot. Unlike some other shows that got reboots recently, the original series has aged pretty well and I would rather get more of the story than a retelling.

Also probably thinking too far ahead but I'm hoping the two leads from the dub get to reprise their roles should licensing work out that way - I swear Spice & Wolf was one of Funi's strongest efforts from the 2000s, both writing and cast chemistry-wise.

Correction: Biscuit Hammer, Helck, Nier: Automata, and now this.

It's like they are attempting a marathon where they chain how many unlikely and long-awaited anime announcements they can chain together. These are all right after one another.

I'm happy for fans and all, but I so wish that instead of this trend of reviving old franchises they'd make adaptations of the tons of great manga that haven't had any adaptations yet and could do with more attention...

Better late than never as the saying goes. But really, this is a bolt out of the blue. I didn't realize the novels were still that popular enough to finally generate the conditions for a long-overdue continuation of the anime. But more of Holo and Lawrence's love story that also teaches economics is a gift.

Considering it's Kadokawa involved now and not the Hasekura owned company, which made those VR games - it's sure not.

I never thought I would see the day this would happen but here we are.
I do wonder if it will be a remake or a 3rd season though.
I think the original anime holds up remarkably well, it really has a romantic feeling about it.
But I guess that with a new staff and all it will likely never look quite the same so maybe a remake that can pave forward to new sequels is the way.

To preface, I'm more than a bit biased here as a fan of the series.

That said, it's not really accurate to say that they're "reviving" an "old" series. The revival happened 6 years ago when the sequel series featuring spoiler[the child of the original protagonists] started publication and the main series returned to publication. IIRC the new volumes of the main series run somewhat parallel to the sequel, but I haven't had time to catch up on those volumes yet.

There is a ton of material they could adapt with just this series, and given that it still has an active fanbase, it's probably a very safe investment business-wise. As other posters have said, it would be very nice in my opinion if they either just continued from where the second anime season ended or budgeted for multiple cours so there might be some hope of them actually wrapping up the "main" story.

In a more general sense, I don't disagree with your assertion that it'd be nice if more of the other really great series out there, be the manga, novels, or whatever else were adapted into anime form. Unfortunately, there are far too many series out there for everything worthy of an anime adaptation to get one, and also far too many anime series end up being little more than a very expensive advertisement for the series they're adapting. While I'd like to see more good series get adaptations, personally I'd prefer to see more series adapted to completion... something that is now (arguably at least) possible for this series.
