I've watched Your Name last year and, man... what an experience. I cried. I don't care for "plotholes", how generic MC is etc etc, I've never enjoyed a movie so much.
Can't say the same about Weathering, it was just... pretty. Just okay. Premise of this one sounds interesting, so... patiently waiting for a teaser. |

A Makoto Shinkai film will always demand my attention. I like the premise and hoping Stephanie Sheh will cast the dub with the intent of really stepping her game up for this film's dub.

Is it me or are all recent Shinkai movies the same? There was more variety in his early work. 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Garden of Words (companion pieces but nothing like them since)
The Place Promised In Our Early Days (unlike anything else he has made) Children Who Chase Lost Voices (ditto, particularly considering the amazing juxtaposition of dark themes/violence/xenophobia/grief and elementary school protagonists) But now the last 3 films in a row involve: A. 16-17 year old girls with magical/supernatural powers or abilities B. male companion C. natural or ecological disaster themes |

^^Actually, all his movies to date have a female (cute!) and male lead in that age range who develop an emotional connection with attendant mysticism. Excepting the She and her Cat short. The main differences are in the narrative themes and how they involve the characters. Critics tend to focus on the repeating similarities as being "same-y" but I think many people resonate more with the themes and characterizations which are all different. His latest works seem to have a tighter focus on one main theme so maybe they don't seem as expansive as in his early days.
I am excited for the latest show because it seems to be a metaphoric treatment of a topic that is very impactful to many people IRL and I'm fascinated to see how Shinkai-sensei handles it. I just hope it isn't his way of getting on the "isakai" bandwagon. |

Thank you for your response. But please consider: The Garden of Words had a 12 year age gap (and no mysticism) 5 Centimeters Per Second also had no mysticism or sci-fi. That is why those to are companion pieces: gaps that foil a romance (age and distance) and lack of fantasy or sci-fi In addition, Children Who Chase Lost Voices had its youngest protagonist plus no romance because spoiler[Shun dies in the first act]. It was also the only one to deal with discrimination. Also, The Place Promised In Our Early Days - in my opinion his best movie even though I acknowledge that Your Name was more entertaining and visually superior - had the female lead absent for much of the movie, leaving the story to the 2 guys (even if you do not regard it as a love triangle, it was clear that both of them liked the girl). It strangely did not deal with discrimination like Children Who Chase Lost Voices even though there was a huge opportunity to (half of Japan was still occupied by the U.S. in its alternate history). I guess that I am guilty of comparing him to Mamoru Hosada where all his 7 films are completely different. Indeed, even though Belle and Summer Wars both heavily involve virtual worlds nothing else about them is similar. |

Summer Wars reused pretty much the entire plot of the second Digimon Adventure film, right down to some almost identical shots. |

Thanks for that. I have never seen - and will never see - Digimon content so I didn't know. However, I have read someone write "Summer Wars = Digimon" in the past. I simply forgot. |

agree that of late his movies seem to have the same theme/storyline. let's hope this one has a different twist. will still look forward to it
