Is this the first time they've done a series based around a Monster Card?

Yes. But the game itself also have a couple of storyline that was told through the cards (Duel Terminal, World Legacy, Vendread, Albaz)

most archetype has either their own standalone story or part of overreaching story especially archetype during and after GX era.

Honestly, I think it'd be worth a shot for them to do an anime series around one of these archetype's stories rather than what they've been doing with the regular anime series. I could be wrong, but I hardly even get the sense that anyone is paying attention to the anime anymore.

i hope he will make a story really focused on raye (the girl that appears in the card), but i have a slight fear the author is going to put his typical boy self-insert. It wouldn't be weird considering who he is.

Are we sure this is Pokemon, that character looks more at home in a techno fantasy series.

I've long thought a story based on the lore of the cards could make a good Yu-Gi-Oh! series, so I'm excited. Yoshida returning for it is interesting too.
