Yeah, I'm part of the Kickstarter for the movie and saw their posts about this. They also have a pathway to get refunds after announcing the major changes with a deadline in the spring.

I just hope this Sakurai blacklisting doesn't halt Discotek's upcoming Blu-ray release for Mononoke in March.

It's Suzuki all over again except it's for the true reason.

I guess this was inevitable, but I expected them to delay using some excuses until Sakurai's "time out" is over... so kudos for them for not faffing about but actually taking the risk of removing him from one of his iconic roles. I hope they're not going to lose backers over this.

(It sucks because Sakurai is a really amazing seiyuu... but well, here's the proof that "only good people can make good art" is a fallacy. Just because you're really good at your job doesn't mean you can't be a gigantic douchebag and ruin things even for people who enjoyed your work.)

I am also a backer and was a big fan of Sakurai as the medicine seller but I think they made the right decision.

Theoretically, sure. In reality, though, I highly doubt that would actually happen. After all, it's not like Sakurai makes any money off of continued sales of Mononoke (he got paid for his voice work, and that's it), so there's really no reason for Toei to halt sales & licensing for anything related to Mononoke. And if Toei really wanted to halt Discotek, they would have had plenty of time to do so already.

I'm kind of wondering about that too or what other roles he might lose.

Yeah I don’t really see why old projects will be affected. Sakurai is just a voice actor he is not the main creator.

It’s just moving forward he won’t be cast in new and upcoming projects.

Probably the single best performance by a male seiyuu in the hundreds of shows I have watched. It will be difficult for his successor to integrate humor and menace in the way Sakurai did in this role.

Meh, he can enjoy his semi-retirement.

Yeah, it's unlikely to but I couldn't help but think of a few things where they were about to release something in the US and then someone involved in Japan did something shunworthy right before the US release was supposed to happen. One off the top of my head was the "On Your Mark" Ghibli video, which was supposed to have been included with one of the home video releases (I think it was going to be a bonus with the Disney box set? Something around then). But then Chage and Aska had legal issues and it still hasn't been released to US home video to my knowledge, even though it's been shown in theaters.

That's slightly different circumstances, but just worried the licensor says to wait for a bit before releasing it. Kinda like the Advance Wars for Switch game delay.
