I was bored by the fansub of the Kenshin anime, and only supported the manga to the 'end' before the incident. Upon checking, certain volumes are still out of stock at RS, and I'm wondering if Viz will bring them back or cut their losses. Anyway, I'm just glad the fans aren't defending the behavior like they did with Jacko and Polanski.

Sounds like a pretty fantastic panel though and I do feel like I'm missing out since I read and heard a lot of positive things about it. And frankly, getting to meet Rieri and Soma-kun is great enough!
Anyways, was a fantastic episode and exactly what I was hoping it would be knowing the information they released on this remake. It contained every facet I love about Kenshin and the OP confirms where they'll go with it in Reiwa era visuals.I'm looking forward to more. OP had great homages to the old anime's even.

Purely from an artistic standpoint, I had a hazy, sleep-filled thought on remembering that Kenshin was part of the summer lineup this year that surely the first episode was going to be much more bombastic; with the more condensed pacing, tighter budgets, and shorter seasons overall for modern anime, surely you wouldn't expect a modern audience to put up with the comparatively sluggish pacing of the original, right?
And then in my head I toyed with where the new first episode might leave off in order to make a stronger impression. But, uh, I guess we're going more for a Rurouni Kenshin Crystal approach?

I never expected this version to have any big deviation from the original anime. The fact that there is no need for anime-only filler arcs makes me happy enough. Plus all I've ever wanted since the early 00s is a completely animated Jinchu Arc and I will finally get it.

I'm not surprised another Liden Films project turned out to be middling. Definitely one series I will not be partaking in.

What is the Rurouni Kenshin Crystal approach? All I'm seeing from that are figures.

Sailor Moon Crystal was a reboot of Sailor Moon that said it was going to be closer to the manga but it kinda wasn't and also the animation and quality was really bad and they started aping the original anime more and more as it went on.
Calling this Crystal is too harsh though. It seemed perfectly fine so far. It was closer to the first manga chapter than the original anime was already and unless we start seeing major plot deviants like Sailor Moon Crystal then it seems like fearmongering.

It's a remake. What did you expect? Shishio arc level fight animations? The entire first volume with the exception of Sanosuke, Kenshin defeats most of his rivals with a single blow, because of the difference in skill level. I expected nothing different to that for the remake, and personally am glad they didn't go for flashy fight choreography just because of rule of cool. This works perfectly in terms of storytelling, because when he eventually meets a foe he can't defeat with a single blow, the audience will understand, these guys have skill. And personally, I wouldn't judge this entire series or reboot of the first episode, because it's faithful to the manga, which had slower pacing in those earlier volumes. It will pick up with the black hat and onii gang arcs.

40% of the original TV series (40 out of 100 episodes) was filler. Cutting that out will do wonders.
Also, it's very glaring that none of the commenters brought up how, unlike the original TV series, the remake includes Kihei, the older man who Kaoru brings in off the streets. He was absent in the original TV series with his self-proclaimed "Battosai" brother weirdly trying to fulfill both parts of the brother duo from the manga in being a vicious brute who only cares about killing while also being a sophisticated schemer and planner. I'm glad that the remake stuck closer to the manga particularly since Kihei will be seen again later if the manga is adapted in full.

Besides, a "modern audience" would benefit more from a proper, careful adaptation than rushing it because following the manga is exactly why I see the positive reception even from newcomers, so it seems they're doing it right from the start.

The first episode being just fine is about what I expected, I never thought the introduction of Kenshin was that amazing. When I bought the volume 1 DVD 20 years ago I actually didn't like the anime at all, it took time to become a great show and I think the same could happen with the remake so I'm hopeful.
