Seems Miyazaki has no intention to retire just yet despite earlier statements to the contrary. Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka told this in an interview with CBC;
Quote:
"Other people say that this might be his last film, but he doesn't feel that way at all," said Nishioka through a translator.

He is currently working on ideas for a new film. He comes into his office every day and does that."

They could have paid for a plane ticket, and given Hayao the award personally. To give that man such an award virtually, is really shameful.
