Hopefully this will be good and not like one of Kenneth Branagh’s horrible, horrible Poirot adaptations. Although I don’t know if any of the Japanese-adapted Poirot mysteries fared any better, as I’ve still yet to watch them. Given the characters are college students, I predict that the cast shall be a smorgasbord of the latest hottest actors, with a sprinkle of idol amongst the mix; I can only hope that Kento Yamazaki will not make another appearance as I am weary of his admittedly good-looking face.

Regarding the actual plot of the Decagon House Murders (which I think I actually read because I was intrigued by Rebecca Silverman’s review of the novel, and also because I had only heard of Ayatsuji as being the author of Another, which while popular, has also been memed on in anime circles, so I didn’t think much of him and was surprised to see that he was more relevant and respected in literature than I had initially expected), I don’t think I enjoyed it that much, or at least not as much as I did Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. I hope they don’t change much from the novel to the live adaptation, so that maybe I’ll understand more as to why the story is so highly regarded.

This novel was a fun read. Perhaps not a top favorite of mine as far as mysteries go, but the twist for the killer is a very clever one (I immediately wanted to read through a bunch of scenes again after the reveal was finally made).

And considering that twist... I have no idea how this can be fully adapted for live action. Apparently there is a manga adaptation out there (the artwork is quite nice) — I wonder how certain plot elements were handled there.

I remember reading the author's notes on the manga for this series, and he specifically commented that he had been positive that the original novel wasn't ever going to be adapted specifically because of the twist. Of course, he noted how he was happily proven wrong by Kiyohara's manga adaptation but remained skeptical about it ever making its way to live-action. Now that it apparently is going to, I am also in the camp of, "How the heck are they going to adapt this without giving it away?"
