The figures don't work out...

The figures work out fine. Yes, the dollar amount was less, but the number of units sold is higher, which is what it was referring to. In other words, lots more Viz manga, at $8-$9/volume, sold this year, as compared to most companies $9.99-$12.99/volume.

And it's sad to see the lack of love for Dr.Master and Infinity Studios. Sad

But those figures are supposed to be for graphic novels as a whole, not only manga; the manga figures are listed further in the article. If we actually look at the article by Brian Hibbs, the figures for graphic novels and manga sales are not the same as reported here.

Wow, the Viz discount makes a difference, huh. >_>; I love Viz for it though, and that's definitely a reason I pour my English-language manga budget almost entirely into them.

Pleaseantly surprised POKEMON sold over 24,000 a volume; I'm guessing they meants Ginji's Rescue Team? Didn't know Vampire Knight was so popular either, seeing as unlike the other titles, it has no previous exposure in the US and it's not exactly Fruits Basket.

Yes, it looks like the dollar amounts have been mistranscribed. In the Hibbs article, the 2007 overall dollar amount was $95,174,425. The $61,097,050 was the 2006 manga dollar amount. (As suggested by quirks' postings.)

Well apparently there's a bad habit of manga sites taking the information out of context.

From the original article:
"Just to get a little meta here, over the years several manga-related blogs copied out this section (and just this section) of the report. If you’re reading this in a report not on Newsarama, I strongly urge you to go to the source link and read the preamble to this article – several facts about reporting methodology change from year to year, and may change your perception of the numbers!"

So here's the link of the original article -
http://www.newsarama.com/Tilting2_0/Tilting49.html

And just to show balance here is an article that shows an opposing view point to Hibb's opinion of the numbers-

So Naruto is king. Never even heard of Warriors: The Lost Warrior. And ADV which was supposed to be dead in the manga world beats out Broccoli, CMX, and Go! Comi in sales. Go figure!

I wonder if Masashi Kishimoto sits on a gold toilet?

Did Media Blasters, Yaoi Press, DMP, and other manga publishers not listed not have books in the Top 750?

No love for Infinity studios, it would seem. Anime cry It is most likely to the majority of their series are korean, and they are hard to find in book stores due to the smallness of their books. And infrequent releases. (some series haven't had a volume released for 2 years!!)

Go! Comi has wonderful series, so it is nice to see that they are getting a share of the love. ^__^ I'm happy I devote a majority of my money to them.

ADV managed to live again though, once it started to release titles like Gunslinger Girl and Yotsuba&! (I think that's the title, I can never remember it).

Yes, it's Yotsuba&! I'm actually surprised that those two titles alone make them score higher than Go!comi and CMX.

Yeah I realize that, I am actually collecting Yotsuba&!, and from what I understand Gunslinger is very good as well. I just found it funny that they only recently jumped back into the market, yet with just their very few offerings managed to beat out some of the companies that had no hold ups with what they offer whatsoever. Some of which have direct ties to Japan.

I think it was just funny, but I welcome ADV back. I think considering the placement this report puts them in, is a strong sign of ADVs return indeed.

There must be other ADV titles being released, right? Don't they have the Eva stuff too? So it's not just two titles, those were just the two that came to mind as having their releases going again, and two titles with a big enough appeal to bring ADV back into the market enough to beat out some of the publishers who don't have titles that are quite that well-known.

They have Eva stuff. I also suspect Azumanga Daioh is still selling well.
