I found Buso Renkin to be very entertaining and fun series. I remember giving it 8 out of 10 in My Anime List. I also ordered this set as soon as I could. To me, it's like shounen done right. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it rather embraces its clichés. It has fun characters and action, catchy OP doesn't hurt either, and the best of all... it has an ending.

Something I have been wondering for a while:
When anime reviewers review something, they often have some gripes about "I've seen this somewhere else" - i.e. originality. But one may argue that as anime enters the 21st century, and several dozens of new anime are produced every year, then mathematically one would expect that "originality" should decrease linearly because more anime are being produced and are using elements from shows before it. I mean, sure, you can make new anime or plot elements, but the shonen battle genre is very specific: it has to be about the same thing. So should people stop making shonen battle serie because all the ideas have been used before? |

I'll admit that this anime wasn't the best anime to come out recently, but what's the point of listening to a review were the review hates the whole genre? If anyone out there doesn't mind the complete lack of artistic inspiration that shounen anime provides, try this one out.

Yeah, yeah, "there's nothing new under the sun", but when sometimes STINKS so much of "I have seen this before", it's merely torture. It's possible to arrange or twist or polish the old into something involving, even if it's derivative. Does Buso Renkin do that? Hell, even the review suggested such an idea that could have made things fresh(even if in jest): female protagonist. |

The reviewer wasn't hating on the genre, though he could have provided a few examples of shonen which have the addictive qualities he mentioned. Buso IS pretty derivative, though, but Watsuki seems to figure this out early and turn it into a spoof of itself. The series can be pretty hilarious at times. It's just a shame it falls so flat on its face when it tries to be dramatic.
It almost feels like Watsuki was looking for a place to channel all the gags, parodies and wackiness he couldn't put in Kenshin (since that was a serious tale, for the most part) so he came up with something that had very little uniqueness to offer but had a wealth of potential for gags. |

The manga for this was actually starting to get good towards the end but then Watsuki sabotaged it by spoiler[suddenly changing his mind about killing a character, pulling a Deus Ex Machina to keep said character alive, and completely changing the direction of the plot in the process.] At that point the series died and it's little surprise the series was cancelled from Jump only a volume of material later.

The shounen freak speaks: It's not that bad. Sure, it's in the very same mold as many other series, but it's not that bad. I enjoyed it a lot, and that opening song... Fukuyama Yoshiki made a really good song. |

Glad to have read something about Buso on ANN. I was planning on buying the box just because it was fairly cheap and a few people, who's opinions I don't necessarily respect, had said some nice things about it. Thanks!

I admit it is not the most original series out there. It was lacking a bit on the character development at times, but overall I found the series entertaining.

That's probably spot-on. He did a lot in BR that he didn't manage to do previously, and that he had wanted to do in the past: optimistic typical shounen series, female character who can kick some ass, using the title "Samurai X" somehow, a character in the design of Papillon, part-funny part-serious mentor types. And what not. Busou Renkin is a little crazy and random and thrown-together as a result, and yeah, uses every cliché in the box - gleefully. I understand why people wouldn't like it, but I find it cute. He's obviously exorcised all of this silliness now, considering how dark and serious (and inspired) Embalming is. |

I seldom make entries here, but I cannot just sit back and let potential viewers be driven away from a show which I enjoyed as much as I did. Early on, I got a bad feeling because Busou Renkin seemed like a shallow mix of FMA, Bleach, and, most of all, s-CRY-ed. But here's the thing--by the end I felt it was better than the first two of those and equal to the third. It seemed fun at the start, went into a slump around the midpoint, but made a comeback and ended well. The damned-if-he-does-and-damned-if-he-doesn't dilema Kazuki finds himself in with regards to his artificial heart gets surprisingly deep and clever towards the end. I was surprised how original it became near the end, given how it had seemed a definite knock-off early on. You don't have to buy it, but Busou Renkin is definitely worth a Rent.
And the review didn't even mention "Moonface"! That's a crime. |
