Lovely column.

And I happily polish my RAGE-o-meter for next week's barrage of "SHINJI IKARI because he's WHINY and EMO and is SAD WHEN HORRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN TO HIM AND THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM" answers.

personally i judge a quality of a fansub by just the subtitles. IE, if they use proper and correct english, and if they are layered so that when one character speaks at the same time as another, i can read what both say(by pausing the video) I've seen a few fansubs that just put the texts over each other, so i can't read both, which is REALLY annoying.

To the flake: Seriously?! You're offended over an apocalypse joke? My father's is a Minister and he makes apocalypse jokes. Granted they're not as long or detailed as Zacs, but still. I've heard pastors make apocalypse jokes on Sunday morning. You're gonna make people think Christians have no sense of humor. I'f you'll excuse me, I'm going to go read A Canticle for Leibowitz.

Oooh, I feel special, commenting on the first page of Answerman!! Very Happy

The things that bug me about subs is when they have awkward timing (leave the words up too long or not long enough, put them up halfway though speaking, put up a big block then take it down while character is still talking....) And of course bad grammar is annoying, it kinda jars you when you spot a typo. Or, and I know I probably shouldn't say this after that question, there is a very simple phrase that even someone who barely knows a lick of japanese can tell they subbed wrong. But I usually just make a note to look for better subs if I watch it again and move on.

I feel like most people are going to hate me for saying this but the first person that leapt to mind when I read the Anserfans question was Tohru Honda. She's always struck me as an unlikeable Mary-Sue with no character devlopment at all. >.< The only reason I finished that show was that I was young and people kept harping on about it....

One interesting note I thought of during the sub controversy.... Most people say professionals are good cause, in addition other things, they don't make speed sub errors. In response I'd like to direct you to my Naruto collection of volumes 1-27, where there are more inconsistancies then you can shake a stick at. In some volumes it's heavily americanized, and in the very next one you'll have all the honorifics back and people calling Kakashi 'sensei' and whatnot, they can't even decided whether or not to translate jutsu names!!

Anyways, thought I'd put that out there. Not that anyone ever seems to read my posts. :p

I'm usually not picky about fansubs, just so long as they are not written in blatant "engrish" like the lovely scentence "you lied me!". I usually only stay consistant on one group for name purposes (sometimes, the inspector in Monster is Lunge, other times Runge, I just ask for consistancy!)

As for the most unlikable protagonist, I can't say Shinji, for I have not seen Evangelion (although I am more than familiar with his reputation).
Buy, my least two favorites turn up again and again as Hitomi from Escaflowne and Yuu from Noein. I'd probably say I hated Yuu more, in fact, except for the whole thing aboutspoiler[ being Karasu's past self], I really don't think the story would have even let him stay there. Debating on wether or not to continue this train of thought and e-mail him on how much I did not like Yuu, especially because I loved the series so much and I think Yuu was the only thing keeping it from being a masterpiece, his constant glaring at Karasu and shouting Haruka's name in an overly dramatic fashion were a huge annoyance to me. If he hadn't been such an annoying and useless character (mostly this one), I wouldn't find any faults with this series, but alas! Yuu had to be an unlikable little twerp with the personality of those annoying rainbow webbed toe socks, except wet, plastered to a wall, and smelling of wet dog and burnt popcorn. This is what i get for typing tired apprantly.

I don't think Zac tends to print more than two responses about any given character/series in the answerfans section. I'm considering writing one up for Makoto Ito, but I'm expecting he'll be getting plenty of (well-deserved) hate, so I may go with Shiro in hopes of seeing my response in the column. Or I could go explain why I hate Rosette (and since she mostly isn't disliked, it's not like I'd be competing for attention with respect to the character).

504NOSON2: If you still have your response saved somewhere, you could just post it here.

Yes, I suspect Zac will be getting quite a bit of Shinji Ikari responses, unfortunately.

My other guesses for repeated responses are: Haruhi Suzumiya (people missing the fact that Kyon is the main character), Renton Thurston, Vash the Stampede (for his no-kill stance), Ash Ketchum/Satoshi (some wiseass will ask why he hasn't evolved Pikachu), Kira Yamato (not that he doesn't deserve the nomination), Tenchi Masaki (for duhr huhr, not chosing fan favorite girl X), and several fighting shonen main protagonists.

I wonder if Zac will regret opening Pandora's box. But then, he's always doing that.

Personally, overly drab main characters are more irritating to me than the spineless, sensitive, or overly exuberanct ones. Robin from Witch Hunter Robin, for instance. Just dull. It isn't unlike an anime series to have more interesting supporting characters than the main one, but when the main one doesn't even make the top five, there's a problem. (WHR is a bad example, since there's really only one or two likeable characters at all.)

But by all means, let's talk about Shinji Ikari not thinking piloting his mother around to defeat deadly aliens and being severely tramatized each time is awesome.

Next week's anserfans question is a breeze for me. Hands down, Fushigi Yuugi's Miaka. There is something about her that just...drives me nuts. I just cant stand characters like her. And the reverse herem 'every supporting member in the cast loves me for reasons no one can quite understand' thing is really quite aggrivating.

On the male side, probably Ayase from the BL series 'no money'. He's a freeking girl with a penis. Not to mention scarily submissive and stuck in a relationship that is just plain creepy. Everything about 'him' is unsettling.

More realistic answer now:

Honestly, out of all of the series I've seen for a while now, the most annoying hero to me was... And this is going to seem odd for me to dig to:

Digimon 02's male lead... I think his japanese name was Daisuke or something... Not sure, but the english dub gave him Davis or something.

I disliked him because he later carried on a quality I started seeing in other heroes. Extremely and unpleasantly optimistic of the situation. There was no underlying struggle for the character like say in season one concerning how Tai had problems concerning Kari and no deeper power hungry problems in season three like with Takato, which I still hold to be the best to this day. Or even season 4, Frontier, where Takuya had his problems of trying to prove to be a worthwhile leader to the group.

In a generic shounen series that has typically always had decent character development to it, 02 was in my opinion, the weakest season... and it was because of this character. Got a problem?! HIS POSITIVE OUTLOOK WILL ALWAYS SOLVE IT!

It's the only series I've actually never seen the behavior of a hero who had no... meaning for it. And again, it's one of what I feel is the 'few' shounen series that was ALWAYS so childish, occasionally dabbling in darker tones of death, sacrifice, the power of teamwork and all that jazz. It's one I look back to this day and say, unlike pokemon or yu-gi-oh and say, "I'm not embarrassed to have watched that."

The stream of untranslated terms in fansubs are the direct result of some fans thinking it just 'sounds cooler' and in some cases I can't really disagree with them. Many attack names just sound dumb when translated literally.

In defense of the fansubs of Bleach/Naruto/Death Note, have you seen the dubs? Last I checked zanpakto/jutsu/shinigami are not in Webster's. Anyway most of the complaining I'm sure has to do with bad grammar (inexcusable for a company selling a product) or sometimes stilted dialog.

I agree. I was really looking foreward to reading all the responces to last weeks question. I even had a responce planed, but real life got in the way and I did not get it in in time.

Actually popped off an answerfans response this time- don't expect it to be printed, but Jubei from Jubei-chan annoyed me enough that it was worth doing the rant again. (Just take the stinkin' eyepatch! For cripes sake, just take it!)
