I really hope someone licenses Bakemonogatari, I mean look how well it's selling. I know it obviously won't be the same over here but it should be worth the license for sure.
Besides Angel Beats!, this is the other anime I am really looking forward to watching. |

That makes it all the more expensive to license. Unless a show has broad enough appeal, domestic success within Japan can kill licensing potential. |

I'd say it has a near 100% chance of getting licensed, but the main question is when and by who. As someone else has said, since the property has sold so well in Japan the license holders are going to be asking for a price much higher than normal. And who knows how much time it'll take for them to lower the asking price? And R1 companies know that just because it was a huge hit in Japan does not mean it'll have equal success here. So I think it'll be licensed, but it will probably take a decent amount of time. |

Actually I would say the chances of this getting licensed are close to nothing. One, it would be a localization nightmare. Second, it's high success in Japan would mean its going to demand a high licensing cost which most companies will only pay if the show has mass appeal such as drek like Naruto or Bleach and this show will never sell as much here as it does in Japan and it does not appeal to that gigantic 12-17 demo like popular shonen shows.

Chances of Bakemonogatari getting an R1 release: 100%. Toradora! sold well in Japan as well (I think) and a new company like NISA was able to get the license for it. And the announcement of that license came slightly less than a year after that show's end of broadcast in Japan, which while not the fastest announcement ever, wasn't all that bad by anime standards.
Fear not, Bakers, Hitagi and the other Oddities is coming to our shores eventually. eta: there's even an outside chance Funi could pick it up (although I wouldn't bet the farm on it). Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't they licensed Eden of the East? If they'll take on a somewhat oddball project like that, then Bake doesn't seem to be out of the question for them. And if they did, then we'd get one of those endangered species thingys: a dub! |

You're comparing something that sold on avg 10,000 copies per volume to something that sells 75,000 copies per volume and is the best selling tv series since dvd was introduced. |

I wasn't aware that the disparity in sales was that great, but it doesn't change my opinion that Bakemonotagari will go R1. Can anybody refer me to a title that sold well in Japan but never made it to N.A. because the license fee was too high?

In the event this series is not produced for R1 consumption there are fansubs currently carrying Bakmonogatari.

Most of the noitaminA stuff (strong ratings and sometimes strong DVD sales) falls under this category. FujiTV feels strongly about receiving adequate compensation for these shows, so most have been out of reach of either Crunchyroll or DVD distributors. Right now, most distributors (particularly Sentai) are just grabbing whatever they can for cheap.
Yeah, it's a matter of perceived demand. They feel that there's broad enough appeal to justify the expense. |

I doubt it. First of all, a lot of their earlier stuff has already been released in R1: Honey and Clover, Paradise Kiss, Ayakashi, Jyu-Oh-Sei, and even a later title like East of Eden. I believe that Nozomi has licensed "Antique Bakery" (not a hundred per cent about that) and if that's true, you KNOW they didn't pay much of a licensing fee. I'm willing to bet that if you look at, say, the top 30 selling Japanese DVD titles from 2008 back to 2000, virtually every single one of them has received an R1 release. I think this whole "was really popular in Japan, but would have limited appeal in N.A., thus R1 companies won't pony up for a large licensing fee" thing is a myth. |

Macross Frontier which has an avg sales figure of.... Macross F (Frontier) 20,844+23,399=44,243 (9) (Satelight) Only Bakemonogatari, Gundam SEED Destiny, Gundam SEED and Code Geass s1 have outsold Macross Frontier when it comes to tv series from dvd and up. Of course it's Macross and the Macross licensing situation is just fucked up. |

Exactly. Macross Frontier is a great series that will NEVER be licensed, but that has nothing to do with the general R1 licensing situation. Macross is a beast of its own. I would offer Blood- the names of some titles that did great in Japan but were never licensed, but I can't think of any. Not necessarily because there aren't any, but because I don't know much about licensing and stuff. However, I think Cross Game is a possible contender (although it is still ongoing), and I don't hold out much hope for the thoroughly excellent Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, although it never got as much attention as other, lesser, titles. |

Despite how excellent the Cross Game anime is, I've yet to see any of it place on the top sold anime DVDs in Japan list. At least the manga is regularly on the manga list.
