BTW, the manga-ka for 'Monkey appears to have his own twitter account.
I thought he was insane from the get-go. 
Damn, makes me wish we got the upgrade. 
Anyway, I'm just glad I found a copy of the original before Pulp folded. Really fun read. |

This has to be one of the most hilarious mangas i've ever read, Bravo for bringing it to more people's attention. The Best part is when they show how you can sell anything to people by manga-izing it (Train Schedule, funeral home...).

Oh, no Tetris? I thought using Tetris as an anology for women's comics was one of the funniest and most clever parts of the book. Well, that and the Panty Evolution.

Well drat, I feel silly for getting rid of my copy years ago. Just another reason for me to horde my manga for years letting it take over my house.
I remember it being pretty funny in an odd way, but as something to actual help one at drawing comics I never took it seriously (course I suppose you're not supposed to). I've had just about every "How to Draw Manga" style book every produced thanks to relatives, and the only ones I've ever enjoyed and found useful would be the Shoujo Manga Techniques published by DMP, which I think is out of print now. It presents things in the typical comic style with characters explaining things step by step, but I don't know, maybe it was just a really good translation, but it explained things in a way that made it really easy to grasp. It's a shame only two were published (Drawing Basics, Writing Stories) before DMP stopped. |

That is so hilariously accurate. Actually.... I'd run out of space with quote boxes if I picked everything here that was accurate. It all is. I need to read this. Gah! And this is why I have 10 holds at the library!

Sounds pretty interesting but was it flipped? I tried reading the sections you included, realized they weren't making any sense, and then tried reading them Western fashion so I'm doubly confused.

Back in the day (pre-Tokyopop) pretty much all manga was flipped. It made sense at the time most of it was sold in comic book stores and dudes at comic book stores were not going to read some backwards comic. It's hard enough to get an American comic fan to read something in black and while no less read in the opposite direction. Which is why even further back in the day they (GASP!) colored the manga in on top of flipping it. So you can find color comics of Akira and Project A-Ko and such out there. On another note, I was totally thinking how I needed to buy this like two days ago. I guess I better because now the price will go back up on it, now that this review has been done.  But damn does it look funny.
[edit] I order a copy off of amazon last night. Hopefully it will get to me before Otakon.

Yep, it was flipped. Viz didn't start regularly publishing manga in the original unflipped format until about 2003, so "Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga" just missed the boat.
One thing I forgot to mention in the article was that the original title of the manga was "Saru demo egakeru manga kyoshitsu", or "Saruman" (Monkey man(ga)) for short. I wonder if the title of "Bakuman" is an in-joke to that... |

I got the writing one on clearance at Chapters recently- these were nice books, and I like they they were done in a comic format. They were very much so about mainstream shojo manga, but were very practical, like the better how-to books tend to be. I read some of Monkey in Pulp- if people want to sample it, try tracking down a few back issues of that, it's sort of like SigIkki's ancestor.
