I thought The Nobuo Uematsu autograph thing was a complete disaster. The only way you were certain to get an autograph is if you went to the panel and asked a question. The only way you had a chance to ask a question was if you were lucky enough to not get forced over by that awful, rude, staffwoman who kept forcing people over. The second the staffer said who wants to ask a question, everybody in the aisle seats immediately shot up and filled the aisle. If you were more than one seat in, you had absolutely no chance. If you made the mistake of going tot he panel, you also had no chance to get in line by the autograph room since they line was already closed up at 2:00PM (autographs were to be given at 3:30).

I was pretty upset by this. I hauled some of my vintage Final Fantasy games around me just for the opportunity to have him sign them but I never stood a chance. The only thing I could do was sit in the panel and listen to the awful questions people were asking the legendary composer just so that they could get a ticket. They should have given the tickets out as a lottery or auctioned them off or simply done a first come first serve donation booth earlier in the con.

Any info on how that 31k number compares to previous years? I felt like the lines and crowds were longer/larger than usual this year.

I remember they said the number was around 26,000 two years ago when I was there, so I'd assume last year was somewhere in between those numbers.

Quote:
New anime is often being shown in 16:9 widescreen but the screens are often 4:3, resulting in a squished or cropped look to the shows. Lee said that in order to accomplish that change on all screens would cost another US$15 per badge, although they have pulled it off in the Video 5 HD room.
So they're saying that a few new projectors and/or screens would cost 31,000*$15, or $465,000? Really? Though there's nothing wrong with displaying 16:9 video on a 4:3 screen as long as the output is actually correct -- if it's looking "cropped" to the attendee just because it's not filling the whole screen space, that attendee just needs to get over it.

Big issues are the same as every year. Too many staffers do not understand the layout of the convention center. I get flack for it, but it's true (and there's an easy fix... all staffers come early each day to "walk the flight line"; easiest way to get familiar with a place the size of BCC).

Personal peeve, and I saw that it hampered some of the industry folk who were at the BCC for the first time (it happens, but it seems to happen a lot based on my observation; a "walk the flight line" exercise, if they're not already doing it, would help to alleviate that... as would carrying a copy of the con map).

Minor issues, but this year was one of the best Otakons I've experienced, at what is probably my favorite anime convention. Great job guys!!!

While on the topic of feedback, why didn't ANN cover Masao Maruyama's panel? You know, the panel where he announced that he had to set up a new studio (Mappa) to finish Satoshi Kon's movie (which currently has no funding to be finished right now) and do certain projects because things have really changed over at Madhouse. You guys did get a head-ups about the panel from Jim Vowles after all, so I was just wondering....

I don't know how Otakon is run, but Sakura-Con does "VIP" type passes without charging extra. If you reserve a hotel room in one of the con's hotel blocks, you get a priority wristband that gets you into main events before everyone else.

This should read:
