Have they said which character designs they were going to use?

"The Moretsu Uchū Kaizoku Production Committee for the Bodacious Space Pirates television anime series is collaborating with Asahi Shimbun to create the manga."

I'd imagine its the anime designs based on this.

That's what I was thinking; I just wanted to make sure since them using a picture with the novel designs made me expect them to be used until I read that.

This is a little unexpected, but I suppose a fairly natural progression. I suppose that the anime must have done reasonably well. An online venture isn't the biggest vote of confidence, well not yet anyway, but it's a good thing. I have no idea if it's in good company with those other manga or not; their titles are rather... opaque.

Despite my discontents (which are rather less after the last episode), I do like the series, so the more, the merrier. I actually kind of wish that there were English versions of the original novels; not my usual reading, but I'm curious.

I hope that he's right; of the two, I largely prefer the anime designs, although perhaps just because they 'got there first' in my case. Although there's something indeed to be said for the design used for Chiaki in the novels. (Schnitzer and Lynn, however, seem like obvious improvements; Cyborgs and Go Nagai sideburns for the win!)

I do know that the original light novels series have been very well-received in Japan. As such, I'm not surprised at a manga adaptation, not to mention the fact this is a true 26-episode TV series for its season, a rarity in Japan nowadays if your series is not derived from a long-running manga franchise (One Piece, Meitantai Conan, Toriko) or has "grand sponsorhip" by a major toy company (the Pretty Cure franchise, which has Bandai as its main sponsor). In fact, I would not be surprised they've already quietly "greenlighted" a second season to start early in 2013.
