I hate sueing culture BUT if you are selling rights to something you no longer have the rights to, which seems the case here, then yeah perhaps that money should be given to its rightful owners.

they need to prove two things
1. license expired in May 2011
2. other company make money off it after May 2011

I'm behind Tatsunoko 110% on this one *and not just because Next Generation was a REALLY BAD adaption/continuation of the series Anime hyper* I hope they get what is owed them.

may 2011 is not that long ago
they had the license for more than 10 years?
selling the rights for a movie or program could have been in the works since last year, easily

this reminds me of the case where the japanese company tried to by-pass ADV and take money for the evangelion movie rights as soon as the license ADV paid for expired even though it was in ADV's contract

I am against the japanese company unless SRE is trying to 'extend' some kind of license agreement to a 3rd party while their original license is expired.

I'm also with Tatsunoko on this, and hopefully this matter will get settled. I am a huge fan of the original series, but other than the shirts and die cast Mach 5s, I'm not too crazy about the other merchandise made on the series.

I'm also not a fan of the Next Generation series. The continuity doesn't fit in with the original series with the generic character designs that look nothing like the original anime's art style. Not to mention the lack of cool villians.

Well, the first one should be pretty easy for them to prove, and if SRE is trying to sublet the rights after that period, then they are in the wrong.

Tatsunoko suing others.
Tatsunoko and SDF Macross license.
In my eyes this company is quite similar to Apple (in a negative manner).

CBR News: Allegory's announcement on Facebook notes that Speed Racer Enterprises actually lost the rights to the property nearly a month before the first press release went out -- was Allegory's deal to use the Speed Racer rights ever actually closed?

David Fawley: Yes, we did have a signed deal. Allegory signed their deal with Speed Racer Enterprises in early May, granting Allegory the rights to produce books and a wide assortment of products. Allegory paid Speed Racer Enterprises a large advance in June, a month after SRE lost its rights to Speed Racer.

When did Allegory become aware that Speed Racer Enterprises lost its legal right to produce products based on the property?

Allegory was notified by Tatsunoko's legal counsel in early July 2012 regarding the status of SRE’s right to license the property.

Sucks for companies like this who've spent money and resources on creating products, only to be told that the licensors didn't have the right to sublicense it.

And in spite of the lawsuit, Speed Racer: TNG has recently returned to Nicktoons in the form of reruns.

Oh well, I suppose Tatsunoko couldn't do a thing there.

And more recently, Nicktoons has been airing new episodes in the form of "movies", before switching to a 1/2-hour format, airing just before Hero Factory.
