I vote Hisoka for scariest clown.
Mad Pierrot was close in that he'll outright kill you whereas Hisoka would let you live if you had potential buuut No one's ever seen Hisoka be beaten or at least face a threat where he's clearly on the losing end and panicked where as pierrot...(please don't kill me) took one in the knee... and started crying... |

Andersen would probably have disagreed with you - he likely thought that by killing his generally pre-adolescent girl protagonists he was freeing them from a life of pain and torment - at the end of "The Little Mermaid" she is able to work towards having a soul, which he paints as the ultimate thing to have, and even Inger in the horrifying Girl Who Trod on a Loaf eventually makes it out of hell. The guy even thought that The Little Match Girl was a happy and heart-warming story. (Sorry, I teach a couple courses on fairy tales...)
Speaking of Andersen, wasn't there an anime of his story "The Snow Queen" at some point? One I always use in my class is Satoshi Kon's Magnetic Rose when we study "Sleeping Beauty." I love the way she lures in princes to become part of her dream. I also like to teach the first chapter from the manhwa Chronicles of the Grimm Pedlar, which combines "Sleeping Beauty" with the far creepier "Donkeyskin." |

Black Rabbit is up so high because people overrate "Problem Children". Also, it was a weak list of candidates, other than Usagi. Now, if the list had been "Favorite bunny... girl", then Mikuru would've taken the (carrot) cake.

She only mentioned 8. I'm sure she knows there are a lot more. Anyway, I didn't even know that about Mermaid Melody; that's cool. Of course it's been awhile since I've read it and I only own 2 of the volumes lol. |

I concur with Princess Tutu at number 1. It is a masterpiece worthy of the number one spot. But where is Revolutionary Girl Utena? Another Magical Girl Masterpiece that turned fairy tale tropes on their head and moved television anime forward by demonstrating what the medium was truly capable of (there's a reason it won 'best TV series' in its year).

Ha Ha yeah he was a pretty devout Christian to put it lightly. I guess the religious undertones make it hard for me to fully enjoy a lot of his stories beyond a historical context. Had me going there for a minute with the new poll - I was wondering what the heck a "clow" was. I thought it might be some drow like monster or something.
Urashima Taro shows up in so many anime I've lost count (Love Hina, RahXephon, and Gokudo for example), but two in which it plays a prominent role would be Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, and Faye's backstory (not to mention the quest for a VHS-VCR) in Cowboy Bebop. Oh, and how did Magi escape being on the list?

Well, it certainly has a less fan fictiony feel to it than MAR; At least those stories play out more than "Hey, it's Jack." My favorite reimagined fairy tale is Kanon, mostly because reimagined fairy tale is lowest on its list of accomplishments. But let's list: The Little Mermaid, Cinderella {discussed}, Sleeping Beauty {invoked, discussed, deconstructed}, The Girl Who Cried Demon, I mean, Wolf... And whatever Nayuki represented. Snow something? |

There's Kurozuka, too, which is sort of a retelling of the Noh of the same name, which itself is a retelling of an older legend.
In the anime, Kutomitsu is a vampire who takes an exiled noble (masquerading as one of two itinerant monks) as her lover and who spoiler[keeps reattaching his head to fresh bodies to keep him alive for centuries.] In the Noh, Kuromitsu is a female shape-changing oni, who enjoys eating people; and the itinerant monks are just itinerant monks who escape being eaten by her, although the exiled noble Minamoto no Yoshitsune appears in it, too. In the legend, Kuromitsu is a woman driven insane after she realizes she killed her own pregnant daughter to get the liver of the fetus. As an aside, stuff like this is what I was hoping Folktales from Japan would be ... you know, actual folklore. |

http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=1005 Yes, there was. There was also an adaptation of Anderesen's The Little Mermaid that got released over here in (IIRC) the 70's. It kept the original ending of the tale, even if it softened the harsher tone with a silly dolphin sidekick and lighter early antics. I'm quite happy to see some of my favorites in here (Tutu, Sailor Moon, Ceres). One thing I find interesting is that I never saw Ceres as an adaptation of a "fairy-tale;" to me, it always came off as a reimagining of a "myth." I wonder what the difference really is? I know fairy-tales can also be quite dark, but Ceres almost seemed too dark! There's few shoujo out there more brutal or disturbing. I never got around to watching the anime; I wonder if they softened the plot a little bit. There's some later elements I can't imagine playing out the way they did in the manga *shudders*
