That's not terribly shocking and it's probably a good thing. I've gotten the impression that the best means to mitigate human decrepitude is to keep actively doing stuff. It might actually be rather relaxing for him to be able to work without the expectations, needs or constraints of a feature film.
That said, while I don't expect it, I could conceive of such a project suffering rather serious 'scope creep'. Whatever the case, if he makes one, I'd be particularly interested in seeing it. |

Good news, hope it actually happens. I've had the privilege of seeing a few of his short films at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, and they really encompass all the of the heart, quality, and wonder that his full-length films do (in a much more compact fashion, of course).

Since Miyazaki has stated a few other times he'll retire but didn't, I think that this might happen.

Well, he specifically said he was retiring from feature length films, so this really wouldn't count for him coming out of retirement. These short films for the museum were always a very likely possibility. |

Well I don't mind animated short films from Studio Ghibli, if it's a good way to control the studio budget and to let them restructure, it doesn't bother me, it's better then closing down the studio.

He may, but then again he may not. Especially if the so called "re-orgainsation" chucks out all his tools. He's stated categorically on the record that he "hates CGi" .

Awesome, but I don't think this should surprise anybody who reads the fine print. He did retire from directing feature films, but not from shorts. In fact, I think I recall them officially saying something along those lines in an interview.
Also, Miyazaki doesn't HATE CGI. He was/is kind of bitter with it, but has also officially said something along the lines of "I think computer capabilities can and will eventually surpass what the human hand is capable of creating, but I'm far too old to get into it." And then he goes on to say that he's been lucky to be able to work in the same field he's so passionate about for multiple decades because most people aren't and never will be that fortunate. |
