I am curious as to how you can make such a dark series into a musical because this doesn't strike me as the type that would be made into one.

I've seen Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde (which was also a fairly dark show, including lots of murder, violence, rape, and death) many years back, and it's fairly easy to recognize his music here, I think. I'd very much love to see this, I bet he can transform Death Note's hammy-ness into equally hammy tunes quite easily. Or, rather, I know. Ideal song to open a bag of chips to.

Sweeny Todd is about a serial killer barber who uses his razor to slit his victims' throats, then cooks them into meat pies for unwitting customers to eat. Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, and Chicago are all also dark, in their own ways, and surly plenty more that I'm just not aware of. So there's plenty of precedent for dark musicals already.

Also, Japan seems bigger on musicals than other countries these days. It's actually relatively common to make popular anime, manga, and video games into musicals, especially when it's popular with a female audience. Sailor Moon, Rose of Versailles, Black Butler, Phoenix Wright, and surely many more, have all had musicals. So it's not so odd for Death Note to get one too.

If Batman could have an ice musical, Death Note can have a normal musical.
