How do you make a children's book easier to understand?

By visually showing what is happening versus it being mostly text.

Wouldn't that imply Japanese children have no capacity for imagination?

The adapt kids books into comics all the time. Not everyone is a great reader and comics can help them understand and enjoy it better.

@Lemonchest: Not necessarily. Some people don't have as much imagination from a book than they do from a comic book. Also, Brand is right in that there are people who can have issues reading and other adapted forms like comics or movies/TV shows can help them understand it better.

Older children's books are usually harder sells on modern kids because of the outdated language they're not used to, so there's that.

It's been a bit since I read some of the novel, but if I remember correctly, it was written in Miyazawa's local dialect from Northern Japan. Of course, it being nearly 100 years old also means there's a quite a bit of Japanese that simply isn't regularly used (or even at all) in the language today.

It's also ridiculously philosophical at times. I'm sure if you give a bit of it a read, you'll understand.
