More Yotsuba&! Excellent news!
Hope we're not waiting too long for the English language release.

Still a better hiatus story than Hunter X Hunter.

We've been told that it's unlikely to ever happen after the author's experience with the Azumanga Daioh anime production.

Whoa, what was the story there? Azumanga Daioh seemed like a solid adaptation of the manga so I'm surprised there were any issues.

It's amazing to me that Yotsubato is still ongoing- I thought the manga came to an end ages ago.

It's great to hear news about more Yotsuba&!. I love that series.

Is there a reason why this series has been so infrequently updated as of late? Is the author sick or something? I couldn't find any reason stated in the article.

That's a fandom rumour that Azuma went out of his way to deny. According to him, his refusal to approve a Yotsuba&! anime has nothing to do with any past issues, of which there were none, but rather with him believing that it would be very difficult to animate well. The ANN article is pretty vague on the why, but in Azuma's original post he talks how in Yotsuba&! even a sequence as simple as the protagonist going over to play in the house next door consists of lots of mundane details, like Yotsuba climbing down the stairs with great difficulty, waddling through the corridor, heavily sitting down in front of the door, awkwardly putting on her shoes, opening the heavy door with great strain and then energetically exiting. He says that normally an anime would just cut all those small details out, whereas it just wouldn't be Yotsuba&! any more without them.

He has taken a few long hiatuses to work on other stuff, like designing mascots for conventions, but the biggest reason seems to be that by now he can just afford to update whenever he feels like it.

In layman terms, he wants Yotsuba&! to be highly detailed. Welcome to the 21st century! With CGI movement around the house (and the street and other buildings) can be animated in high detail at a high frame rate. Even Yotsuba herself could be done in CGI (since her face is almost an emoji) leaving only the rest of the cast to be hand drawn. The only question in who is going to invest in a high budget SOL anime series.

No thanks, I'll take no Yostuba anime over knight of Sidonia Yostuba

I've always thought the "nothing happening throughout many panels" excuse was really dumb. Not only is that absolutely possible, it's very common in anime! Just add some cicadas and you're set.

Now, if the problem's that Azuma wants everything very detailed, that sounds reasonable. I think KyoAni would do a nice job, though. Thankfully they've come back to making stuff other than their own originals.

I think if it ever gets an anime, it would be until the manga is (almost) done. However, if this article is any indication, who knows when that would happen.

Don't make it CGI, though. Ever.

Agreed. If the mangaka thought certain moments of Yotsubato wouldn't work well in an anime adaptation, what's the point of expecting a computer-generated image version out of it (which I think wouldn't fare well anyway)?
