A lot of people are already freaking out about this because they want one complete game, but the problem is that the older Final Fantasy games are so massive that it'll take a good 6 or 7 years at LEAST to make the game in its entirety. Fans are impatient enough as it is. So releasing the game in chunks lets fans play the game sooner, even if it isn't the whole thing. If they treat each part like an expansion, it could definitely work. Though like everyone else I would prefer a complete game.

Get rid of Cloud's feminine arms first, then I'll decide if I want to worry about new cut scenes!

The original game was 4 discs long. It makes sense to do this.

Now now, let's not exaggerate things here; also, you're confusing with FF VIII, which was on four discs. FF VII was barely worthy of being three discs long, since the last disc being nothing more than the final dungeon & whatever else you could do in the overworld.

As for the remake being across multiple games, I'll agree with the general consensus of SE simply milking the cow here. Still, if they want to add in more story elements & whatnot then that's cool.

Uh oh, well if there was one thing that could make me lose interest this would be it. I'll still keep an eye on it but SE is gonna have to try REALLY hard to convince me to buy two halves of the same game (unless they each sell at $30 or $40 each).

This kinda came out of nowhere, but it really doesn't surprise me. They just can't do a modern HD RPG like this on the scale of the RPG's of old. FFVII was a massive game, but it was very simple graphically. We had to use our imaginations to pretend the rest of the game looked like it does in the battles and cutscenes.

So much more money and work goes into making a game that looks, and plays, like this remake. A single game that looks this pretty just wasn't feasible with FFVII's massive scope of content, probably for both hard-drive/disk space and budgetary concerns.

Yeah, that's the first thing that popped into my head. Makes me wonder if (close, but not exact) 1:1 remakes of each disc are a possibility for each "episode." It's been so long I can't quite remember if they had decent stopping points though...

Actually is it that they are selling separate games over a span of time or is it that they are splitting it into separate disks and selling it as one game? It isn't really clear.

Because if its the later, there's no problem.

They're separating the entire game into smaller, but still decently sized chunks so that they can get the game to fans sooner, and complete it over time. They'll also recoup portions of their budget with each copy of each episode sold. It's basically like how Konami cut Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes off of the full game. Except that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 1 will likely have a lot more content than Ground Zeroes did for its price.

Seems more devs are now going the Telltale route and releasing games in episodes format.

Also, Squeenix probably didn't assign a large staff to work on this remake since it's technically not a new game, so they can only produce a little bit of the game at a time (unless gamers wanna wait years to produce the whole game in one big chunk).

I think every record in the world just came to a screeching halt considering the sound I just heard. This is not going to end well for SE and it's clear the producers are ignorant of that. Funny how people get all giddy for Square games...and then are brought back to reality by seeing that the company in its current state is not golden age SquareSoft.

That line of thinking doesn't work. The problem is that while the game was three discs long, you didn't have to wait for indeterminate amounts of time for the next part of the story and you bought them all at once.

You have to look at it like this: Final Fantasy VII was a massive game. To recreate it with modern graphics at their finest, and keep everything and not cut anything, is a monumental task. It would take them YEARS to make the entire game the way fans want them to. Not to mention how impatient people can be. So their solution is to make a portion of the game, polish it up, ship it out, and sell it. Then make the next section, polish it up, ship it out, and sell it. It gets the fans the game, but in chunks rather than up front. Lets them recoup some development costs, and eventually, fans will have the entire without missing content and even some extra stuff they threw in.

People are gonna whine about this like crazy but honestly this is probably the only way a FFVII remake gets made without a mountain of side characters and locations getting cut for budgetary reasons. I mean, everyone just assumes a FFVII remake is gonna be some huge cash cow and yeah, I don't doubt that it will sell millions upon millions of copies. When you really start to think about the production cost of fully recreating FFVII though it's hardly so clear that it would actually be even profitable despite the sales numbers it could do. A lot of gamers don't really get this but the economics of game production have changed astronomically in the last 20 years. Production costs have risen at a rate completely disproportionate to either price or demand. Thus, the reality is that you simply can't make the same game you did in the mid-90s with modern graphics. You've either gotta significantly reduce the scale, significantly downgrade the graphics, or find a way to make more money. I certainly don't want the first one, and while there's a ton to be said for the second one, that's obviously not what they're going for here. So that really just leaves option number three. It's not ideal but that's the price you pay for modern graphics.

Yeah, but it was four Playstation One (ie. smaller than a DVD) disks long.
When you're too big for PS4, ya got problems that could use some thinning out. Too much plot or too much game, it appears to be too much something for its own good.
