Zac and Hope talk about One-Punch Man, Iron-Blooded Orphans, Noragami, Utawarerumono, Digimon, a whole lot of other anime, and at no point do they discuss Star Wars. PLUS: Live questions from the chat!

Let me guess: Star Wars gets released this weekend. If that's the case, then I must be very much out of the loop when it comes to popular culture..... Neutral

Anyone would guess Eupho is #1.

EDIT: Or maybe not, there's this show if anyone still remembers it: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

On anime adaptations,

To me the most important thing is for the anime version to be its own self enclosed story that is not dependant on further reading of the source material. But most of the anime adaptations I have watched, especially if they are one cour, do not stand on their own. But there are some anime adaptation that have been well handled.

I have not read the manga from which Kids on the Slope was adapted from, but I know that it is not that long (45 chapters), but plenty of stuff had to be cut out to fit into 12 anime episodes, which feel like a complete and well constructed story. I have no clear idea of how long the manga is, but the Gingitsune anime is a good adpation because it only adapted a part of the source material, but the anime's strong conclusion make its story and characters stand on its own.

Personally my favorite kind of anime adaptations are the ones that adapt all the stuf from well constructed and thought out source material. This is the reason why hope that the Attack on Titan manga continues to be well written (I don't read the manga, but I assume it is good) and is not that long to eventually be adapted into 75-100 anime episodes.

If you are referring to which show ANN readers voted number one, it is probably Blood Blockade Battlefront or One-Punch Man. Sound! Euphonium is kind of divisive.

Sound! Euphonium is not in the top 10, actually. You're as stunned as I am.

Interesting.

If it's One-Punch Man then more people voted for an anime that hasn't finished airing yet. I considered it more of a 2016 anime.

Sucks for Eupho though, don't know how it could be divisive. With how relevant the show has been lately, it made sense for it to have received a top spot on this site's poll. Guess more people need to check it out.

Euphonium is the best show this year for me, hands down. However, I am hardly shocked that few people agree.

Anywho, I would very much like to hear a Digidub with the original cast. I am mega excited for that.

Finally, I have heard buzz surrounding this amazing new movie coming out. What was it called...Astral Aggression or maybe Celestial Conflict? I can't remember. Might be worth checking out.

I can definitely understand why sound eutho was the best of the season for some people.

However it does have a lot of problems, and I am sorry but it's not that popular with my customers and it does not have that much merchandise at all in japan.
That should raise a def com 1 normally, heck they already designed the music keychains in the show and yet they never made them.
Normally a show getting green light for more seasons/movies is encouraging... But I am sorry they are green lighting a lot of stuff that I see no way of them making on it. More Tamako market, anyone.

The show may not yet have much in the way of figures yet, but there's tons of character goods for Eupho right now or coming soon, and in BD/DVD sales it was one of the highest selling series of the season on average, and a bonafide hit in the context of the past few years. I see no reason why they wouldn't be totally onboard with making good on the announcement.

As for more Tamako Market, Tamako Love Story says hi

I am a bit surprised, but in the context of what was said the podcast, I'm thinking BBB was #1. Personally, I did vote for it it the top five, but I'd probably have to give #1 to Death Parade.

I will state that my votes were essentially restricted to things I watched as a broadcast dub since I primarily watch shows dubbed, but I have a feeling that the shows I voted for will still be represented in the top five.

I'm pretty much 100% certain #1 in the year-end poll is One-Punch Man. That show is basically the only one I can think of that has really exploded with an audience outside of dedicated anime viewers. There were plenty of other shows that were popular over here, but that one's the only one I can think of that made a recognizable footprint with general audiences.

As for my #1, I'm stiiiiil wavering between Blood Blockade, Yurikuma, and Tokyo Ghoul Root A. Really loved all of those and it's so hard to pick a favorite.

Eupho was also my favorite show of the year, but I'm not surprised. KyoAni is a polarizing studio anyway, and Euphonium was a polarizing show even for people who watched it. The biggest flap was over Kumiko and Reina's relationship, and the arguing largely boiled down to people's opinions about yuri and about how far KyoAni was willing to go (or not go) with that angle in the series.

I know that Mr. Bertschy has seen some different Gundam series so I liked hearing his thoughts on Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. I was intrigued when he said the show seemed really Gundam-y to him. As someone who's seen almost every animated Gundam tidbit out there, I know that I think about the franchise a lot different so I like hearing differing opinions.

Personally, I find this Gundam series to be pretty atypical. This is especially noticeable in the dearth of fighting. I'm perfectly O.K. with this, mind you, as the battles are very carefully placed and choreographed into the broader themes of the episode very well. Also, other little things like the whole business side of the story is different. It's all a good thing for me, however; I'm really enjoying the deliberate pace of the series.

Re HunterXHunter: I think the other characters will get air time if any more anime episodes are created since I'm assuming the manga is ongoing. I watched the first 100 episodes on NetFlix (which took awhile) and the additional 48 on CR. The show struck me as a life-experience road show for Gon.

The Ant King arc IS worth the watch. Your chat friends are steering you right on this suggestion. His character portrayal was quite formidable, almost loathesome. But I found his "transformation" in the anime to be quite moving. His transition stayed in my head for quite some time after I finally got to episode 148.

I'm hoping this anime will continue.

Do hope you guys get time to watch Fargo, the 2nd Season currently airing on cable TV. The next to last episode in this series had a rather interesting twist (not sure if it killed the show or delighted....jury's still undecided) but if you're a fan of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy you'll find the episode narrator choice was an excellent one.

Parasyte won last year before finishing, too.

Good to see Concrete Revealutio get a Watchman comparison that's exactly how I compared it to a friend of mine. The first few episodes are hard to understand but once it got going I found it enjoyable.
