I've already got these on my schedule for attending.

Now that my job pays to send me to these events I don't have to feel bad about missing a chance to see any of the entries. My only problems is when they overlap. But the line-up looks good.

I'm curious about the Case of Hana and Alice. So I'll be getting tickets for this one.

I loved Hana and Alice, one of the best animated movies I had seen in years. It would only appeal to certain tastes, but I really enjoyed the Coen Brothers' esque flavor of comedy.

Wow, I'm extremely envious of you right now. Crying or Very sad

I'm still waiting on a US release for Hana and Alice. Why the market for these sorts of films is so small, I will never understand. Hana and Alice, Miss Hokusai, Hotorubi No Mori E, and so many others... I'd like to give you money for them please!
It's nice that we get Ghibli and Hosoda stuff, but man, I would really like to see someone distribute some of the more niche ones here. Who is even providing the films to all of these Film Festivals and stuff? They almost always show at several Festivals, but proceed to never get a NA release.

That is a good question. I asked a similar question to the president in charge of the NYICFF. They told me it's a lengthy process in choosing what films get screened. Like going through more than 500 entries or more and then narrowing that down. So who know what doesn't make the cut. Thing is it's a festival for kids so you get live-action films along with the shorts and animation. From the festivals I've attended since 'Summer Wars' screened, it always seems like out of all the other entries from other countries, they seem to have at least 2 (sometimes 3) films from Asia. Either Japan, Korea or China. But of the films from Japan they are picking either the most notable or the one that makes the final pick.

NYICFF 2010 - Summer Wars, Oblivion Island and Mai Mai Miracle.
NYICFF 2011 - Welcome to the Space Show, Time of Eve, (Japan) Dreams of Jinsha (China)
NYICFF 2012 - A Letter to Momo, Children Who Chase Voices Deep Below
NYICFF 2013 - Welcome to the Space show (dub), Wolf Children, Up From Poppy Hill
NYICFF 2014 - Patema, Giovanni's Island (last minute entry that wasn't listed), Approved for Adoption (Korean)
NYICFF 2015 - When Marnie Was There and Satellite Girl and Milk Cow (Korean)

Not to mention they just did a Ghibli retro just recently. And now Only Yesterday is going to get released finally.

I don't know how the International festivals work but I'm sure they work the same way picking from a wide selection. But sadly of the films you do see they might not see a release, but in other countries they do. These festivals also hold award ceremonies where people attend to find out which film got nominated or won. Which is why they hand out ballots to those attending. Even the kids get to vote. But from the 2016 line-up there's already talk of licensing.

The other thing that sucks is when you only get one screening. So far Mamoru Hosoda has attended both times on his last two films. Don't know if he's appearing this time. I had the chance of seeing him both those times, and the honor shaking his hand thanks to ANN user, Maidenoftheredhand. So I'm really hoping he attends this time to do Q&A.

The NYICFF has been going on for awhile now going back to 2009.

I started attending on my own in 2010. It wasn't until 2013 that I convinced my job to pay for my attendance. I get sent to NYCC as well. Because my going to these events (due to my personal knowledge) brings in new acquisitions for our art college library art to which I'm employed.

I'm in charge of 4 budget areas here, anime, manga, animation, video games. While contributing to film (Asian cinema, exploitation) and comics. Aside from my normal duties I'm browsing the internet daily for new materials.

Hey if they aren't going to give me bigger raise for the hard work I do for them the least they can do is pay for my ticket, travel expenses and food to sit on my behind each week and watch animated films.

Plus, its' the one pleasure I have to get out of the house during the most mundane of weekends. Laughing Laughing

*Oh I also want to point out one non-related anime, The King and the Mockingbird. The reason I bring this up, is because it was screened at last years festival. Which was an odd coincidence because Mike Toole did a column early that year about the history behind animated "robots" films. This film was one that he made a connection with in relation to Miyazaki. I decided to attend this screening knowing nothing about it. It wasn't until the end of the film that the same image that Mike put up in his column would be THIS very film. Talk about a coincidence.

Haha, wow, that is quite the coincidence. Laughing

That's a lot of really interesting information. I wasn't at all familiar with how these festivals are handled. That's really helpful. Thanks so much! Smile

You're very welcome. I'm always here if folks have questions.

Also, keep in mind that when some of these films air in the summer, companies are already looking into licensing. The only thing you can do is keep an eye out and see if any make it stateside.

Another plus, just like how festivals choose certain venues to screen films all over the city. The festival now has a deal with our college, the School of Visual Arts to screen films at their theater each year.

Basically, the school purchased an old theater, fixed it up to hold school or staff events. So now the NYICFF/GKIDs is now using us as one of their primary venues for the past 3 years now. This will mark the 4th year. It's a nice theater and I've spoken with the president and he stated that they like it. Hell, they've even brought in sponsors to provided free healthy snacks for the kids. Best year was 2013 for snacks.

Even the NYAFF (NY Asian Film Festival) has started using us. But I get pleasure seeing the kids enthusiasm, and talking with parents. I had the pleasure of talking with a young girl who was reading Yotsuba&. They get shocked that an adult other than their parents knows about that stuff. But some of those films do have some "risque" stuff at times. Which is why they have disclaimers on their brochures for parents to consider.

Tickets go on sale today. So I have to get cracking on these tickets. Because the screenings sell out quick. Everyone that attends the festival get notified. So they are going to scoop up tickets. Members or VIPs can purchase early and they are going to scoop up tickets for family group events. This affects me at times because of convenience in scheduling. So if you're in the NYC area, and plan to attend, grab a ticket and go. Surprised

Got tickets for the Boy & the Beast but I'll probably only go if it's announced Hosoda will make an apperance (which he has done for Wolf Children & Summer Wars)

Note: I already saw the movie at the Phila Film Festival and it was lovely but it would be a bit of a trek and cost for me to go to NYC just to see the movie again. Smile

Same here. Finally finished my schedule. It was fight to figure out whether to see Hana & Alice at one venue and risk losing 5 mins or going a different day. I played it safe. Laughing

I really hope that he'll come. I did try and contact some of the coordinators to ask if he was coming but they didn't back to me. Hell, if he was coming should I have expected them to tell me or anyone for that matter?

But I'm trying to remember if the previous pamphlets handed out mentioned him coming. Summer Wars they did mention him because there was that VIP party they held after provided you paid for it. It was only $35. But don't remember any mention of his attending the screening of Wolf Children. Trying to find a pdf of the schedule is practically nonexistent. But previous ones you can find. These are the color brochures they mail out and can be picked up at the on the floor. But the booklet has more info. But usually they mention it on the site.

Hell, when they did the last minute entry for Giovanni's Island, one of the main production staff members made the trip for the premier.

I'll be doing 9 films this year. We got 2 from Japan this run and one CG animated one from China called Little Door Gods.

Seems like China is picking up in the animation dept as well.

We can only hope. Keeping fingers crossed. I mean he has to be coming this time. I mean it's the DGA. The premier of the film won't be the same if he doesn't show to talk about it.

*Update:

Just got a message back from the festival staff. That he won't be able to attend. But he might be able to provide a video message.

I don't want to post any message that I personally received as it might violate any privacy issues. We can leave the rest up to ANN to confirm this based on their connections with getting details on the festival .

The reason I asked them this question in the first place is because I'm trying to catch screenings where directors, producers or any production staff involved with the film may make an appearance. As I sometimes take photos for both personal and for use on the school's blog if necessary.

So right now they're working out travel arrangements with these individuals.

That's it.

Aww that's too bad. In that case I probably won't head up this year. But you'll enjoy it. It was a great movie. Smile
