Comic Market 95 Sets New Winter Record with 570,000 Attendees Across All 3 Days

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

The Comic Market (Comiket) 95 event in Tokyo drew about 210,000 attendees on the third day on Monday, tying the all-time one-day attendance record. Comiket 94 also tied the same record the third day of the event in August.

The event drew about 170,000 attendees on its first day on Saturday and 190,000 attendees on Sunday, bringing the total to 570,000 attendees across all three days. The event broke the attendance record for the winter event, which Comiket 87 in 2014 previously held at 560,000 attendees. Comiket does not have unique passes for visitors, so a person who attends all three days would be counted three times.

Comiket 95 is the final Comiket event in the Heisei era, as Japan is set to enter a new era on May 1, after Emperor Akihito abdicates on April 30.

Comiket 84 in 2013 holds the summer event and overall event record of 590,000 attendees.

Comiket 96 will expand to a record four days, from August 9 to August 12, 2019, and Comiket 97 will run from December 28 to December 31, 2019. Due to renovations for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Comiket will place the regular dōjinshi circles in Tokyo Big Sight's existing West Exhibition Hall and two areas in the South Exhibition Hall (now under construction). However, the booths for commercial companies will be about 1.5 kilometers (about one mile) away, in the Aomi Exhibition Hall (now under construction) near the Rinkai! train line's Tokyo Teleport Station. Comiket 98 will run during the Golden Week holidays in April and May of 2020, instead of during the summer of 2020.
