Cowboy Bebop - ep. 21, 22 & 23

by Kyle Pope,

Very little to report this time out beyond the painful deletion of one of Cowboy Bebop's best episodes, Cowboy Funk. I suppose its scenes of exploding skyscrapers and screaming innocent bystanders was more than what CN was willing to take a chance on. Who can't see in their the letters minds that CN would no doubt receive if the episode had aired. Makes you wonder why they showed those very scenes in the episode's preview.

Cowboy Bebop: Boogie Woogie Feng Shui

1) Jet's "shit, they're trying to scare us" changed to "they're trying to scare us".

That's it. One language edit. This was yet another of CB's safe episodes. No surprises here.

Cowboy Bebop: Cowboy Funk

1) Episode deleted.

While I was not surprised that this episode was dropped I am disappointed that it happened. This was CB's best comedic episode introducing a truly memorable character in Cowboy Andy. Reports are that this episode along with the other two that were dropped (Sympathy for the Devil, Waltz for Venus) will not be broadcast on the second run of CB according to CN's schedule pages. I suppose the imagery of a twin towered building being bombed and scenes of screaming, panicking people attempting to flee an exploding skyscraper were to much to show at this point in time.

So why did they show these scenes in the preview? Any arguments CN might have had against running that episode lost their significance once the preview was aired. They may as well have gone all the way and aired the episode.

Cowboy Bebop: Brain Scratch

1) Completely unedited.

Considering the tragedies involved around cults and the people who have died as a result of them (this episode specifically refers to Heaven's GATE) the reasons for not airing Cowboy Funk could well apply to this episode as well. Had a bit more time passed it might be the case that we'd have seen Cowboy Funk. Anyway we're in the home stretch. Three episodes to go with the compelling two parter "The Real Folk Blues" to finish the series. My hope is that I will have very little to list as Cowboy Bebop completes its initial run on Cartoon Network.
