The character Junichi (varying spelling: Jyunichi, Jun'ichi), is named after the sound director of GameFreak, Jun'ichi Masuda.
Kenta, Marina, and Junichi are seen in the Pokemon anime outside of the PKMN Crystal special - Junichi battles in the Johto League tournament, and Kenta and Marina cheer him on.
Shiranui-hakase is also seen in the series besides this special - he heads the Roketto-Dan operations at the Lake of Rage (the two episodes with Wataru/Lance).
Both Kenta and Junichi have feelings for Marina, but Junichi's feelings are much more "pronounced".
Kenta's character is modeled after the protagonist for Pokemon Gold and Silver, and Marina's character is modeled after the female protagonist for Pokemon Crystal.
This WAS the only thing related to pokemon that 4Kids did not have the license for. It was later licensed.
In the dub, Junichi is called "Vincent" and Minaki is called "Eugene", despite the fact that Junichi was named "Jackson" in episode 274 of Pokémon and Minaki was named "Eusine" in episode 229 of Pokémon, as well as the Pokémon Crystal Video Game.
