SNK

Foundation date: 1978
Official website:
SNK-Playmore (Japanese)
About:
Shin Nihon Kikaku (translated as "New Japan Project") Corporation was a leading manufacturer and distributor of coin-operated and home-based video games in the 1980s and 1990s.
The company's downfall started in the year 2000, when financial problems resulted in its acquisition by Pachinko manufacturer Aruze. Due to underfunding by Aruze, SNK founder Eikichi Kawasaki and a handful of executives left the company to form Playmore on August 1, 2001.
SNK filed for bankruptcy in 2001. A number of the company's employees went on to form Brezzasoft. Meanwhile, at the end of the year, Playmore won all of SNK's intellectual rights. As part of a major reestablishment in the gaming market, Playmore rehired former SNK employees and purchased Brezzasoft.
On July 7, 2003, the company was rechristened SNK Playmore.
In August 2015, Chinese mobile game publisher 37Games purchased Kawasaki's 81.25% stake in SNK Playmore for US$63.5 million. On April 25, 2016, SNK Playmore reverted to its original SNK name.
