Rookie of the Year Award to have five categories for digital manga

The ASCII Media Works digital magazine Dengeki Comic Japan announced that it has established a Dengeki Comic Japan Digital Manga Rookie of the Year Award. The Grand Prize winner of the award will receive 12 million yen (about US$155,000).

The award will have five categories: digital manga, digital four-panel manga, digital comic essays, digital manga original work, and digital content. A winner in each category will receive an award of 1 million yen (about US$13,000). The Grand Prize winner, chosen from the winner in each category, will receive an extra 11 million yen (about US$142,000).

More details about the contest will be made available in the next issue of Dengeki Comic Japan, which goes on sale on August 25.

Dengeki Comic Japan launched on personal computers and Apple's iPhone and iPad devices in December 2010. It is the first such manga magazine for the iPad and iPhone. Artists published in the magazine include Masuya Hokasono, Rensuke Oshikiri, Eiji Miruno, Yōichi Abe, Chen Shu-Fen, Takahiro Shinoda, Chie Ogata, and Tsukiko Iwamura. Contemporary artist Takashi Murakami (Superflat Monogram, Kaikai & Kiki) and illustrator mebae (Sugar Dark: Umerareta Yami to Shōjo illustrator, Black Rock Shooter animator, Cencoroll contributor) collaborated on the first issue's front cover. ASCII Media Works plans to produce English and Chinese editions of the magazine.
