Sony Outlines PS3/PS Vita's Cross Platform Feature

posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Players can use gameplay, controller, save, other features between systems

Sony outlined details of its officially name "cross platform feature" for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems on Tuesday. The feature gives players a variety of options for using game and other content between their PlayStation devices.

The "Cross-Play" feature allows users to cooperate or compete with fellow players whether they are using a PlayStation 3 or a PlayStation Vita. Some games are already compatible with the feature, and players will also be able to experience Cross-Play with the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale releases.

Players can use their PlayStation Vita systems as controllers for PlayStation 3 games played on televisions with the "Cross-Controller" feature. The PlayStation Vita's exclusive touch screen, rear touch pad, six-axis motion sensing system, and cameras provide new ways to experience PlayStation 3 games. The feature is already available for Ultimate Marvel vs. CAPCOM 3, and it will also be compatible with LittleBigPlanet 2.

A cloud server lets players use the "Cross-Save" feature to switch systems and continue playing without losing game data. Upcoming compatible titles will include Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Sound Shapes, and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

The "Cross-Goods" feature enables players to transfer purchased downloaded content and user-generated content between the two platforms. Upcoming compatible releases will include Street Fighter X Tekken, Assassin's Creed III/Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, Sound Shapes, LittleBigPlanet 2/LittleBigPlanet PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

In addition, players can use the PlayStation Vita to access content such as games and videos on the PlayStation 3 through "Remote Play." The feature is already available for BlazBlue and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, and supporting titles are expected to include ICO, God of War, God of War II, and Shadow of the Colossus.

Sony held a press conference at Los Angeles' E3 event on Monday.
