Japan's Zenon Magazine Holds Global 'Silent Manga' Contest

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Contest to enter "manga love letter" themed work with no dialogue

The Japanese manga magazine Monthly Comic Zenon has begun accepting submissions for its international "silent manga" contest. Designed to break the language barrier, the contest is open for amateurs and professionals alike to submit an original work lacking any dialogue. Rather than relying on exposition, the contest instead asks applicants to focus on "performance" through art.

Applications may be submitted as a PDF file at the contest's official website or via snail mail. Submissions are reviewed by Comic Zenon's panel of judges: manga authors Tsukasa Hōjō (City Hunter) and Tetsuo Hara (Fist of the North Star), Comic Zenon's chief editor Nobuhiko Horie, and the Comic Zenon editorial team.

Submissions must follow the contest's theme, "A Manga Love Letter," contain original characters, and be previously unpublished. The five selected winners will win prizes of 10,000, 30,000, 100,000, 300,000 and 500,000 yen (about US$128, US$383, US$1,276, US$3,380, and US$6,381, respectively). The top three winners will have their submissions published in the Comic Zenon magazine with future plans to publish an individual book. Submissions will be accepted until March 2013. Examples of winners from the previous Japan-only contest can be viewed on the contest website.

Monthly Comic Zenon succeeded the defunct Weekly Comic Bunch in 2010. The magazine publishes Tsukasa Hōjō's Angel Heart 2nd, Tetsuo Hara's Ikusa no Ko: Oda Saburō Nobunaga-Den, and Mizu Sahara's Itsuya-san: She Has a Little Wonders manga.
