Detective Conan Event Accidentally Causes Bomb Scare

Bomb disposal squad dispatched for object with electrical leads left in shopping area

Police in Takamatsu city announced on Tuesday that the suspicious "bomb-like" object discovered in a local shopping district was just an object left behind after a Detective Conan event. The object was discovered on Sunday evening on the fourth floor of the Takamatsu Marugamemachi Ichibangai Azumakan building, near where an April 27-28 event for the popular manga was held.

The object was a white board about 10 centimeters (about four inches) long, six centimeters (2.4 inches) wide, and two centimeters (one inch) thick. It had two red and blue electrical leads sticking out of one end, was filled with an unknown substance, and was wrapped in a silver bag.

The authorities responded to the discovery on Sunday with about 10 police vehicles — including a bomb disposal vehicle — and a fire engine. However, the bomb disposal squad used an X-ray machine to determine that the object was stuffed with papier-mâché and posed no threat. The police had cordoned off the area 50 meters (160 feet) around the object for four hours.

The Detective Conan event's sponsors acknowledged that they used the "suspicious object" in the event and forgot to retrieve it. They acknowleged their carelessness and apologized for the trouble they caused.

"Real Escape Game x Detective Conan: Escape From a Skyscraper," an immersive multiplayer game played out in real-life locales, was held on that building floor on April 27 and 28. In the game, players try to escape from the top floor of a skyscraper before its collapse. To do that, they search the playing area for hidden objects and codes.
