Pacific Rim Director Visits Odaiba's Life-Size Gundam in Video

Jaegers inspired by Gundam's Zack mecha

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro visited Japan's man-made Odaiba island with Pacific Rim actresses Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori) and Mana Ashida (Young Mako). While visiting, he interviewed with a Japanese television program to talk about the mecha that inspired designs in Pacific Rim and visits the life-size Gundam model for the first time.

Pacific Rim opened in Japan on Friday. The film is about a futuristic war between humans and beasts called “Kaiju” (Japanese for monster) that rose from a portal in the Pacific Ocean and have killed millions of lives. The humans then create robots called Jaegers (German for hunter) as a counter-measure to the threat. The film opened in American theaters on July 12. According to the video, the film has grossed US$295 million in international box offices.

del Toro requested Blood: The Last Vampire illustrator Katsuya Terada and Yoji Shinkawa of Metal Gear fame to draw posters for the Japanese release. Japan's creators have praised the film, including Metal Gear Solid's Hideo Kojima, manga and anime pioneer Gō Nagai, and Evangelion character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

The 18-meter (about 59-feet-tall) life-size Gundam statue returned to the Diver City Tokyo complex on Odaiba island last year. It first rose in Japan in 2009. The Diver City complex houses the statue and the Gundam museum Gundam Front Tokyo.
