Magical Teddybear-Transforming Lolita Shokotan Fights More Zombies in Trailer

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The full trailer for Nuigulumar Z, the film casting actress and idol Shōko Nakagawa (Shokotan) as a magical girl with a talking teddybear who fights zombies, began streaming on Wednesday. The video features the film's theme song "Tatakae! Nuigulumar” performed by Shokotan and the band Tokusatsu. The theme song actually brings the movie full circle. The film is based on a novel by Kenji Ohtsuki titled “Hōsei Ningen Nuigulumar” which in turn is based on, that's right, the original “Tatakae! Nuigulumar” song by Tokusatsu.

The tokusatsu (special-effects) comedy stars Nakagawa as Yumeko Aikawa a.k.a. "Dame-ko" (no-good-girl), a girl in lolita fashion who transforms into Nuigulumar when she combines with a pink teddy bear (nuigurumi no kuma). She fights with the villian Takeshi, who plans to take over the world using zombies.

Kazuya Tsurumaki (Evangelion films) and Shigeto Koyama (Evangelion films, Heroman) designed the titular heroine character. The film has 109 zombies on the set — the most on any Japanese film.

The Nuigulumar Z film was announced in April and Noburu Iguchi, the director known for such genre films as Sukeban Boy, Cat Eyed Boy, The Machine Girl, RoboGeisha, Karate-Robo Zaborgar, Tomie: Unlimited, and Dead Sushi, is helming the project. (Nakagawa previously drew the Nōko no Koi manga based on a concept by Iguchi.)

Rina Takeda plays Takeshi's psychic subordinate Kill Billy and Dame-ko's alter-ego Nuigulumar. She also starred in Iguchi's previous horror comedy work Dead Sushi, which resulted in her Best Comedy Actress win at the Fantastic Fest in Texas. The film also stars Mao Ichimichi, Hiroshi Neko, Koto Takagi, Jiji-Bu, Takumi Saitō, Kami Hiraiwa, and Sadao Abe as the pink teddybear Būsuke. Kōichi Yamadera will star as the black teddybear Deparuza Charlie.

The film is set to premiere on January 25, 2014.
