Gundam Mech Designer Takayuki Yanase Sponsors Project HAL Design Competition
posted on by Carlos Cadorniga
Students in differing branches of HAL College of Technology and Design are currently hard at work for a new project. Under supervision and sponsorship by professional mech designer Takayuki Yanase, teams from the separate Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya schools are designing and animating mechs for use in their new college commercials as part of Project HAL.
The three teams—each consisting of 16 members including animators, artists and effect technicians—are working on their own advertisements to display the talent of the students and the subjects one can learn through attending HAL such as game design, anime development and even car design. Each team is drawing from the same design and story to create their own unique commercials.
Thus far, the Osaka team is the only one to release their 15-second ad, which was posted on YouTube on April 17.
Yanase has previously worked on robot design for the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and Ghost in the Shell Arise. Yanase guides the Project HAL members and offers design advice as they create their commercials. He strives to teach the importance of being free and to always keep in mind the importance of their dreams. The individual projects are directed by film director Akira Iwamoto, who encourages each of the Project HAL participants to pursue their passions.
Music for each commercial is provided by J-rock band MY FIRST STORY.
