Saint Tail Holds Contest to Create Manga's 'Next Generation'

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Kodansha is holding a contest through pixiv for fans of Megumi Tachikawa's Saint Tail to become the artist for the "next generation" version of the manga. The contest asks fans to create the story of a new phantom thief who appears in Seika City.

Applicants must follow three guidelines to ensure their new Saint Tail characters share their most important qualities with Tachikawa's original character. Kodansha will serialize the work of the grand prize winner in one of its magazines. Several excellence award winners will have their work made into original goods. The submission period opened on Thursday, and it will run until July 17.

Tachikawa said of the contest, "Now, I'm very happy to have the opportunity to see a new Mysterious Thief Saint Tail. I'm looking forward to submissions from everyone."

The original manga ran in Kodansha's Nakyoshi magazine from 1994 to 1996, and Kodansha released seven compiled book volumes. The manga inspired a television anime adaptation in 1995. Tokyopop released the manga and anime series in North America.

In the manga's story, Meimi Haneoka is a 14-year-old student at St. Paulia Academy in Seika City. At night, she transforms into Saint Tail, a magical thief who steals from thieves to give items to their original owners. Meimi gets help from her friend and nun-in-training Seira Mimori. Meimi's classmate Asuka Jr. is determined to uncover Saint Tail's true identity.
