Detective Conan Becomes Police Chief to Promote Anime Film

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Conan Edogawa, protagonist of Gōshō Aoyama's Detective Conan manga, is no stranger to fighting crime. However, he took on a new, more official role as he became police chief for a day in Shibuya, Tokyo on Sunday.

The project was part of a "Secret Mission" campaign, which also involves Ran and Amuro, to promote the upcoming Meitantei Conan: Zero no Shikkōnin (Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner) anime film. Conan's appearance as police chief also marked an initiative to reduce criminal incidents in Japan.

Conan appeared on stage at a ceremony alongside the children of Tokyo's Kōtsū Shōnendan (Traffic Scouts) and the police mascot Piikun. The event featured a children's traffic safety quiz and explanation of traffic rules. After acing the quiz, Conan received a thank-you letter and Piikun plush. He also posed for a group photograph. Later, a suspicious group of people in black body suits appeared to spell out an anti-crime message. Audience members at the event also received promotional pocket tissue packs.

The 22nd film in the Detective Conan series will open in Japan on Friday. The film is a sequel of the series' 20th film, Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, and centers on Tōru "Zero" Amuro. Police chief Hyōe Kuroda, who is rumored to be Rum in the Black Organization, will also make his first appearance in a film for the franchise.

In the film's story, there is a sudden explosion at Tokyo Summit's giant Edge of Ocean facility. The shadow of Tōru Amuro, who works for the National Police Agency Security Bureau as Zero, appears at the site. In addition, the "triple-face" character is known as Rei Furuya as a detective and Kogorō Mōri's apprentice, and he is also known as Bourbon as a Black Organization member. Kogorō is arrested as a suspect in the case of the explosion. Conan conducts an investigation to prove Kogorō's innocence, but Amuro gets in his way.
