Osamu Tezuka's Erotic Cleopatra Manga Gets Limited Edition Reprint

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Osamu Tezuka and Eiichi Yamamoto's scandalous Cleopatra anime film came out in 1970 under the tag line "far more erotic than 1,001 Nights!" The tale recounts the life and times of Marc Antony and Egyptian queen Cleopatra but while definitely for grown-ups, it wasn't actually outright porn.

Lesser known than the film itself is Tezuka and Hisashi Sakaguchi's Cleopatra manga. The adaptation of the film was released exclusively in the October 1970 issue of COM Supplement magazine and was difficult to obtain at the time.

Fortunately, the entire manga is finally getting a reprint 48 years later. The reprint will faithfully reproduce the B5-size pages of the original and include color pin-ups and images. The book will also include a previous feature with Tezuka and Sakaguchi from the November 1980 issue of COM Journal and an interview with Tezuka Production president Takayuki Matsutani.

The Cleopatra: Complete Edition is available for pre-order on Fukkan for 5,940 yen (US$52). The store will also include a separate piece of artwork drawn by Hisashi Sakaguchi with its orders. The store site showed 57 books in stock during the time of this writing.

Other classic manga have received limited quantity lately, including Tezuka's own The Book of Human Insects and Marvelous Melmo.
